Hello to all, I've been looking unsuccessfully for months now for a sheath to my hanwei scimitar... Does any one know where to get sheaths/scabbards for scimitars? Here's the sleeping beauty: just needs her bed Thanks, Joao

I don't think your going to find a 'of the shelf' scabbard that fits for a blade shaped like that. You might be able to make one yourself. Here's a tutorial yeoldegaffers.com/project_scabbard.asp. But keep in mind that the width has to be the same inside the scabbard from the widest part of the blade all the way up to the throat. Or make a slot in the scabbard on the backside of the blade. Otherwise you wont be able to draw it

Thanks for your reply Bart.
Actually I don't think a scabbard is the best for this kind of sword. I was hoping for a leather sheath or something similar.

Your welcome, well a scabbard can work great with a scimitar for example MRL makes a scimitar with a scabbard. But I think the same problems apply to a leather sheath. For a good fitting one your going to have to make one or get one made.

buliwyf, good choice...if the dimensions are similar enough he could probably fiddle with it enough to make it work.
Bart's got a point too, though...for a truly successful fit, he'll need to make one, or find out of the manufacturer of his sword can make one or offers one.

Ebon palladin, I went over the CAS/Hanwei site to check and I can't find a scabbard for him. Apparently the swords are dulled and mostly used by belly dancers that don't use and/or need a scabbard/sheath.

Thanks for the links guys. I've taken a quick look at them and looks like they are too short for this scimitar. The blade is about 30" long. Oh, and actually the the blade is quite sharp. And even more pointy, in fact so pointy that it had broken the protection and the tip had made it's way out of the box when I received it. (Glad no one got hurt!) Maybe the older model was dull! Don't know! This one is the newer model and is sharp. Here's the photos the guys on the shop took from my scimitar before they shipped it to me:

This is the same kind I once customized into a forward-curved blade. While it didn't come "shaving" sharp and I did that later, the blade itself is so thin it almost can't help but be sharp, especially when they put a bevel on it. I think they might have done that only for decoration, but don't be fooled. Anything this thin can cut.

Since, this is the blade my wife is wanting I emailed CAS for more information and they stated that this blade was not suitable for cutting. They do not recommend sharpening it, although I have found various vendors that do. Strongblade does has a sharpened version but I am not certain about it's suitability for cutting practice either.

Since these are made primarily for dancers I don't think historical accuracy is a huge priority, here is an example of what a dancer would be doing with it: Dancers want something that is big, and visible from a stage. Historical accuracy would be of secondary importance as even the costuming in Raks Sharqui (Oriental Dance) is drawn more from Hollywood movies than historical sources. Sword Dancing is more American than Middle Eastern to begin with: www.bellydanceprops.com/A more historically accurate blade would probably be more akin to the Shamshir which shares it's ancestry with Chinese Dao blades and the Japanese Curved blades which all derived originally from the Turko-Mongol saber. But we're talking about sheaths and scabbards here. Now, a friend of mine (Big SCA buff) has a scimitar-like SLO that has an interesting sheath. It's a leather sheath with a completely open back (two full broad sides and a front for where the sharpened part of the blade sits) and a series of snapped straps that hold the blade in place. A similar scabbard made with wood and leather and perhaps buckled blade straps might just be the perfect thing for a blade such as this.
