With my love for thrown weapons and Viking stuff I'm thinking of getting a couple of Arms and Armor Javelin's (heads only shafts I'll procure here). Anyone had any experience with these spears ?

No, but A&A is a reputable shop that doesn't put out trash, know what I mean?

Yeah, I know all their stuff is pretty sweet so I'm quite confident in the quality of product. Was wondering if anyones thrown one of them or had a handle ?

That could be just a bad example. My A&A Danish Axe is a wonderful weapon.
I would be interested in the outcome of this thread.

Craig Johnson is a manager at A&A, so what he was saying probably reflects on A&A's products.

Well I've got three spear heads 2 windlass 1 hanwei all of which are'nt heat treated and have stood up pretty well so that doesnt bother me, they are small enough I think lack of heat treat wouldnt affect them.

Yeah I know but guys at manning sorta seem so busy. I'm not rushed to buy them or anything so I suppose I should give them a email.
The A&A Javelins are EXACTLY what I'm looking for which doesnt happen often when your looking for something so thats why I've been fairly excited about them.
Maybe I should refer them to those and say "Can I have two heads as similar to those as you do but spring steel" I just like the thick, stubby diamond cross section look of them. I'm more a fan of diamond profile then leaf profile.
Yeah not a bad idea really, I am thinking of getting the A&A Nordland Axe with tempered head so thats why I had a main interest in them. Dont know i'll email manning and go from there.

Well if you ask for spring steel they'll still have to clarify what you want

As I understand it manning make their weapons from the same stuff Bren makes his blades, XK2985S or whatever the designation is.

RE: the A&A javelins, there are some other threads at myArmoury that specifically relate other's experiences with them. The one axe I have handled and examined from them is their Dane axe. I can't say how hard that axe is but quite sharp and has cut tatami more than a few times in my presence.
A&A now has a brother spear in that size and they look like good fun. Look to Jason Elrond's thoughts about breaking hafts (poles) but the points themselves seem quite sturdy enough.
Cheers
Hotspur; the spike on the bill that bent, written of in the other linked thread doesn't really speak to of all A&As individual items. It was a quite more general topic regarding sharpness and why that bill spike bent instead of breaking

Well I'm assuming looking that if a spear head that size was to bury itself into a target and take stress the shaft at the socket would snap long before the metal, the heads might bend at time depending. I would be throwing them into hay bales mostly not hard blocks of wood, those are good for axe heads not quite for spears.
The A&A Javelins look to be cast then finished up and un tempered and the manning actually rolled n forged steel it could be tempered or not they say spring steel I assume that means tempered.
I suppose I would go manning I should support local business, hey might even get them to do a sharp bearded skeggox for me as well (get them to do a nordland equivilent but just however they like to do it).
This will be assuming I get a decent tax return.

as I understand it, something like 9260? Not exactly sure, I am more worried about the smith than the metal most of the times and the guy at manning has my respect on just about the same level as my respect for Bren, though I have never handled a sharpened manning.

If anyone from the US isnt shy about postage I reckon you should give them a try...... the exchange saving benefit would likely pay for postage I'm not getting anything until I get my tax return so I got alot of time to think on either A&A or Manning, for me the choice isnt easy lots of pros and cons either way.

brissybeater,
I see two types of A&A javelins listed on Kult of Athena, with one being called a Greek javelin and both are the same price. Which one were you looking at?

I'm kinda torn between the diamond cross section standard and the leaf shaped greek one (both styles would be norse), the diamond cross section one looks shorted but more solid and less likely to take a set if it hit something hard but penetration could be down its profile looks lacking in penetration. But the greek leaf shape looks like it would be a real nice penetrator and the socket is a bit longer but looks like it could bend on an accidental strike against a hard surface.
Hard to choose.
