Custom Sword Project
Cheness Tenchi Katana
I've decided to rename it Akiko
AKIKO 秋子 Japanese name meaning "autumn"
This is my first sword project. The sword started as a normal
Cheness Tenchi Katana, I bought this a few months ago new from Paul Southern.
Step 1
I started by stripping the plain black laqured saya and staining it ebony black which I bought at lowes for pretty cheap.
It took 3 or 4 coats of stain and 3 coats of polycrilic and the saya looked perfect.
Interesting note about 4 inches from the end of the saya the material changes.
The stain reacted in an interesting way which I think came out great.
Step 2
I changed out the tsuba.
This tsuba(which I got from Vtolds on SBG) is great, but a tad thinner then the original tsuba.
Step 3
So i bought a couple of copper seppa off ebay which are great and there just the right thickness.
I painted them black and I also painted the fuchi and kashira black.
Step 4
Then I bought a brown sageo, its chemical fiber, kinda feels like the silk one on my bushido katana.
Step 5
Next I polished the habaki. I started with a 320grit wetordry paper and moved to a 500 grit and then finally a 2000 grit.
See how shiney it is!!!
Step 5
Next I painted the samegawa black.
I was going to tape off the same but I deciced to paint the whole thing just incase the ito ever moves it wont show so bad.
the only thing I'm waiting on is new brown ito and maybe some new menuki/fuchi/kashira
I've been practicing doing ito-maki and its quite enjoyable. and not as hard as one might think. I rewrapped my wifes Musashi Katana and she loves it, it came out better then it was which is good.
So what do you think so far guys?
