Hi guys,
I figured I would get this out there, although a couple of months early. A friend and I have attended this event as an ad hoc gathering of sword folk and public exhibition dealy-o. This event is held at the
www.manvillesportsmensrodandgunclub.org/
More information to follow on that site but briefly, an open public event that celebrates the early settlers of Rhode Island. Other activities vary but will include militia re-enactors, music, some food and varied vendors. I have not checked to see if the local native Pow Wow schedule will include their presence this year. Some activities and the house food run on a ticket system. Opportunities at the rifle range include shooting a .50 Barrett rifle.
The club is considered one of the premier clubs in the area.
This will be the seventh year running for me and we get a few others from the various sword groups to stop by. We try to keep something on hand for cutting and that has typically been either Bugei wara or Mugen Dachi up to last year. I don't have specifics on that for this year and 2007 saw no mats on hand (although we managed and still had a great time).
I do know Jonathan Hopkins is more than tenatively coming down from the Green Mountain end. A hike for him. There are some local hotel/motel options and if someone were to be making a roadtrip, that is something to consider. There should be no problem camping there at the club, as long as plans are oked with the club.
If someone were interested in bringing in more than a handful of swords/items/supplies; let me know ahead of time so that we can let security and access through with a vehicle. There are shuttles that run between the main road access parking and the club itself.
I hope to have my 12x12 canopy repaired and up for damp or sun. We had quite a wet first day last year and left-over field ponds on Sunday.
More than any other excuse, a chance to meet and enjoy others we meet here online, as well as interacting with the public in a more informative context about the hobbies and histories. I will update possible attendees. Last year we had a very knowledgable antique historian and collector, another we had a visit from SFI's Dennis Boas with his Kevin Cashen collection. Jonathan and another forumite Dmitry made 2007 a banner year with lots of neat old stuff.
I will also add that what I have there is also for trade/ barter. I don't want to make it an advertisement but the possibilities are there. I know I am once more changing hands with one of my A&A pieces as Todd wants it back in his fold. Stuff like that, no hard commercialism, just opportunity. The club also has a vendor application if someone were to want to set up more commercially. Their site sould have or will update those particulars but are reachable via the site.
Wow, that was a bit wordy. What I do know what will be there are some swords from A&A, Albion, Hanwei, Windlass and more. The growing number of 18th and 19th century also makes it possible to truly put history in someone's hands.
Post enquiries for more information and interests. We'll be around.
Cheers
Hotspur; about an hour south of the Higgins Armory museum in Worcester, if that is more incentive or interest
