Hey everyone,
A quick question.
My house has recently become an incense-house, in the same room as my swords, and I am curious as to how it could affect them. They are both production and Nihonto.
Thanks, -Tajima

Horribly, it'll affect them horribly. Pretty soon your swords will be wearing grateful dead t-shirts and too lazy to cut. Then one day you'll come home to find your wallet missing and daughter knocked up. I've seen it a hundred times.
Actually, I don't think it'll affect them at all, assuming you have a cleaning routine. But I'll be interested to hear what others say.

That smoke you see when you burn incense will basically be deposited on everything in the room as soot. The more your burn the more soot that will build up. Dust often and dust well. Wipe everything down regularly. Keep your swords covered and in their bags.

The room where my personal weapons are stored has incense burned in there every day. The incense will affect the cloth portions of the swords if the swords are placed directly over them - as in the smoke will settle into the ito and sageo... causing them to stiffen and become coarser over time as well as tarnish the color of said parts. It'll tarnish the color of the same too if its white. Aside from that the smoke shouldn't have any effect on your blades so long as you clean them on a regular basis (like at least once a week depending on use).
I learned early on not to place my swords directly above my incense and I haven't had issues with my ito or sageo since. I also don't clean my swords on a regular basis (only when I use them and even then not always) but I also have all my swords treated with a synthetic grease loaded with steel conditioners... and I don't suffer from rust or any other negative effects on my blades.

Your swords could become peace loving hippie's and refuse to cut for you anymore... cuz, thats just not right man... they might start smoking pot and, as Avery said, following the Greatfull Dead around on tour. Could be trouble.

Actually I've experienced spotty staining, at least on my Euro blades--if the sword is kept bare, and if it was kept too close to the incense burner and gotten a little ashed on, and if I left it w/o wiping for a while. Lotta ifs had to come together. (Heck, maybe even the type of incense. I never exactly ran rigorous tests.) Otherwise Avery's right. No complicated cleaning, just a clean wipe every day or two, a smidgen of oil. Probably what you want to do anyway just as an excuse to handle your prized swords. (Only wish my swords could knock each other up and start breeding though. Helluva way to expand the collection w/o draining the pocketbook ...)

Yeah... and you could get some reall awesome new styles... like if my rapier and my arming sword produced offspring... of my Viking Short sword and my Gothic Two handed sword... what would come of that? My Dadao and Gen 2 Chaos sword would produce interesting offspring... ;D

Big patchouli fan are ya? I think I still have a 3' stick of it hanging in my building I got at a Phish concert a few years back. One of the best concerts I don't remember.

Hey,
Thanks for the replies. I'll try and cut down on the use, and move the sticks.
Thanks, -Tajima

Kind of like a Great Dane and a Chihuahua--the very act of mating could prove ... disastrous.

I bought a practical fantasy katana off ebay from a smoker (not mentioned in the auction); the sword stank. Cleaning the blade was no problem (a lot of yellow crap came off--nicotine stains I assume) and the faux leather and faux rayskin cleaned off okay as well (more nicotine) but I left it out in the garage for weeks to air out. I washed the sword bag and except for shrinking it came out okay. I'm assuming incense will leave similar deposits on the swords.

The incense scent may get onto your swords and the ito and what not. If you go to resell, someone like myself would not care for the smell. Just my opinion.

It will be fine so long as the ash doesn't get all over them, or the smoke into the ito. By that last bit I mean that you shouldn't burn incense directly underneath the ito.

Maybe just keep some little covers handy and throw them over your swords when the urge hits you.

Burn the incense in a room other than the one you store your swords in; that way, the only real problem you'll encounter is the smell of it in the softer elements of your sword (bag, scabbard, tsuka, ito, sageo) but the blades themselves should not be affected.
Unless you're smoking the whole house out like they used to do for the plague.
