This one came across one of my Taijiquan groups. It's kinda cute because the kids are doing the filming, however, I think I saw a few safety issues here.

Whenever you have kids involved there'll always be safety issues. Having said that, looks like good clean family fun to me. I think the dad is well aware of where his kids are, and takes precaution. Cool vid, Sir LP, thanks for the post. +1

Actually Taran he's using a custom sword he had made. The gentleman's name is Steve Greenberg and he's a fairly advanced taiji player from the same style I practice. Heck of a nice guy actually, he's been helping me with some rehabilitative taiji for my currently sprained hip. avery, yes he does looks like he's very aware of where his kids are, and I would expect that from Steve. I have on the other hand been sending him some links to posts here about backyard cutting and the types of safety considerations that need to be made. Which is a lot of ShooterMike's and RicWilly's vid links. However, it's really making me want to get out and do some cutting. (D*** hip, stuck on the couch and computer....)

well, there being no closeups of the sword itself, I guess you could be right. But it sure LOOKS like the CS Gim...

LPBoyle
i agree with you regarding the gim/jian not being the CS gim. the wings on the ching styled guard are longer than the ones on the CS. they are even longer than the ones on my jin-shi. CS is famous for making a good cutter gim, so the assumption would beeasy. however, my jin-shi is quite the cutter in its own right. just ask Garrett.

As I said, Steve told me it's a CUSTOM he had made from a gentleman who apprenticed over at the Lung Quan (Dragon Well) forge. However, I have heard that the CS (which by all accounts including our own Mr. Southren's is an excellent cutter) was based on a typical Lung Quan type of design.
I'm still waiting to have the $$$ to get an order into Garrett. I'm chomping at the bit, so to speak, to be able to.

I liked seeing a different style of cutting, thanks I am going to China next year for a few weeks...I would like to learn more about Chinese blades and swordsmanship before I go. I did cringe when he cut into the dirt with his blade.

I liked seeing a different style of cutting, thanks I am going to China next year for a few weeks...I would like to learn more about Chinese blades and swordsmanship before I go. I did cringe when he cut into the dirt with his blade. Hmmm... Info on Chinese blades.... I think I might be able to help in that regards. There's quite a bit on info about Chinese Blades in my thread on "Sword Dynamics" /index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=11182&page=1#180010 since Chinese blades are what I am most familiar with the dynamics of. This includes some posts with all the names of the sword parts in Chinese. (*Note a Miao Dao is NOT a Chinese katana, even though I've even mistakenly called it that before*) Another good website is Seven Stars trading www.sevenstarstrading.com/html/ and then there is Chinese-Swords-Guide www.chinese-swords-guide.com/ And then there is the Chinese Swords forum here. Also, if you are interested I could send you complete instructions on a simple Jian form just PM me if you want those.
