Over the last couple of weeks I've been trying to find a gladius to my liking. I came across SBG and read through most of it, noting it'd be hard to find a functional and historically correct gladius. It put me in a pickle, because I want to have fun in my backyard but I also prefer historical accuracy, or closest to. My price range was around 200$ and after searching like crazy I couldn't find out to my liking. My choice came down to www.kultofathena.com/product~item~500360~name~Roman+Maintz+Pattern+Gladius.htmor one of these two that are more historically accurate www.kultofathena.com/product~item~AH2005~name~Roman+Maintz+Gladius.htmlegvi.tripod.com/armamentarium/id261.htmlI ended up choosing the first because of it functionality. I would have waited longer to decided and ask the following question in this thread, but I got it ordered as a gift just today. Are there any functional and historical gladii around 200$? I saw the KC, and not fond of the gen 2s . . any others I might have missed?

I just got a Valiant Armory Praetorian . I like it .It is frustrating not to have a real scabard for it . KOA does deliever fast! If I could produce my own Gladius It would have a VA blade, Gen2 hilt and a Deepeeka scabard with baldric. Here is an intersting Gladius ;http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=VACF404

Yes the Praetorian might have been a candidate if it had a better scabbard . . . That sword in the link is a bit over my price range, but it seems reasonable If only Deepeka had functional swords! That'd be perfect

If only...
But thanks for posting legvi.tripod.com link...didn't even know it existed. They've got decent prices for what they offer.

RicWilly is a gladius fan. Maybe I'll PM him for his opinion, steer him here so we can all read it.

Yes, Ric has quite the Gladii collection...if by chance you missed it, see his thread titled "Gladii!"

I dare to say he would recommend the Kris Cutlery gladius.

Yes, he does love that particular one a bit more than the rest.

Yeah, your right about the KC, just wish they made a mainz version. I got a baldric for it from that last link you posted, Abreas, I really like it. Of the three gladii you posted, I think you made the best choice with the Windlass. I have that one and I like it fine, tho I don't care for the triangular ricasso and it didn't come sharp of course. Other than that it's a fine blade and good looking to boot with a decent scabbard. A friend from work borrowed it for his Marc Antony costume last Halloween. When he returned it I got pulled over for speeding with it laying in plain view in my passenger seat.
I do like the look of a lot of Deepeekas pieces and I'll third or fourth or whatever the idea of making them more functional but they do make no bones about their stuff being for re-enactments and such. I'm still entertaining the idea of making one of their pieces functional.

Yeah the ricasso really bugged me the most about the gladius . . . even before studying to see which gladius to buy, I knew ancient swords didn't have ricassos
But I'll get my kicks with my gladius I'm sure, so it's all good. Ordered sharpening too
Might have to by a Deepeka or a KC someday

I didn't know that there shouldn't have been a ricasso til I read it on here; it does look 'off'. Barring that, its a pretty sword...who knows, the Mainz pattern is one that appeals to me, I may have to break down and get a gladius.
