Yes, I finally got off my backside and constructed my cutting stand. Yay! And what does a cutting stand need as soon as it's constructed? Some cutting, of course. Sorry, no vids. My digicam does not take video (my wife has that one in TX right now). So, some pics: First, to show off my craftmanship, my stand It comes apart for transport purposes. I plan to turn it into a combination Cutting Stand/Pell/Armour Stand eventually... Next, of course, the Target: It's my first cut. I opted for an easy target. And then the results of my first cut (after I went and picked it out of the grass...) I kept it big so you could see exactly what I accomplished. Sadly, I intended to cut it apart. This was not a tip slice. Would've been cool if it had been... And, after swinging and fetching again, I can now show you that I am aware of 2 things: My form sucks and my blade is dull... Oh, yeah, and, um. Watch out for the table...

Hey, we've all got to start somewhere and it's still better than I could probably do at the moment.

Nice work Taran! I have some more wood in the garage for stands that I boutght from the seconds bin at Home Depot. It has been staring at me for months now I think you will find that you will need something rather more substantial for a good pell. I am pretty sure tsafa has instructions for one at his site. Hey, did you intentionally make the stand's base like a swastika? LOL
I'm kidding. Well done; I want one of those, but I think I need a backyard first. So we can look forward to more cutting vids/pics from you, yes? Good!

Hey, did you intentionally make the stand's base like a swastika? LOL Well, I was going for a symbol of Thor... (reference to another thread for those who don't get it...) As for a more substantial pell, I suppose I would want one if I was going to be practicing power on it. But right now, I need to work on form more... And I can practice power on my cutting. Now to find the sword sharpening guide... Oh, and that cut into the table-top (oak) did not damage my blade. I was using the CS Gim (my only cutting blade atm).

I heard the CS Gim was pretty rough and tumble I might have to obtain one when I start cutting with a Jian if i don't go with something from Jin-Shi.

It actually looks like a pretty clean cut. I wouldn't suspect the blade. (though, no offense meant to you; that's a pretty good start)

Well, I cut another couple bottles today (well, Cut 1, mashed the other), and I noticed that I start having trouble getting through the bottle when I get to that soft, loose, brand-name bearing plastic wrap. So, my sword may not be Dull, per so, but it's not Sharp, either (else, I think it would go through that wrap).
But, yeah, my form sucks.

How do you like the CS Gim, aside from being dull?

Well, building a stand is easy and relatively cheap. I didn't really plan for the table-top. I just had to replace my keyboard shelf on my desk and that was the wood left over from cutting my new shelf. The pattern of the legs is just the easiest and simplest way to do that part. I would really recommend a 2x4x12 cut down to a quartet of 3 feet pieces, though. My legs are too short for full stability.
I really do like the Gim. I like the style of the Jian, and the weight of the Gim means that it is almost identical to the rattan swords I use in my SCA fighting. It really is a good little blade. I think I may have dulled it when I chopped up that cardboard box a couple months ago. That glue in the cardboard can really do a number.
When I get my digicam that can do videos, I'll do a couple cuts with my shield. Hell, by then I should have all my gear but my legs ready and I think I may do a couple cuts as geared up as I can get...
