inspired by one that Justin King made a good ways back....I decided to try my hand at it. Didn't start out too good.......my bench grinder (which is older than dirt) gave up the ghost just as was beginning a few months back. Finally a friend let me borrow his 4" angle grinder which has made things move much faster. I have some more hand filing to do, then I can start on the handle and langets. work on it a bit today, so this is where it stands..... this my first attempt at fashioning anything at all like this, so not any where near being good. Just something wanted to try and do... cheers, Bill

Phase II of the project.... handle this is just a prototype handle. I wanted to see how it was going to be to make one, get a idea about length for utilitarian purposes and looks. on to Phase III......more refining to the handle and a little more tweek sanding /filing on the head itself. I may blue it once done...any thoughts on this idea? cheers, Bill

That blueing sounds good. But would it be resilent enough? I mean if you use it would the blue wear off?

So far so good...I'd even go so far as to have a gentle forward curve to the handle; not only would it give it a distinctive look, but the forward curve should add a little oomph to the downward blow.
At the very least, make the haft/handle as distinctive as the rest of it and you'll be onto something...keep us posted!

prototype final...yes it's rough...but it's just the proto...and I've never attempted anything like this before....so. stone masons hammer head...ground flat chisel into a spike. used scrap 1/2" metal binding strap for the langets...drilled through and attached with finishing nails clipped off and peened. handle is a piece of hickory I hand carved out. Wrapped & glued a small piece of leather around the handle just below langets. tossed a little Birchwood - Caseys gun blue on the the head when done..just for giggles. Now I know what and what not to do....it's been a good learning experience and now can move on and start on a better one. Opinions. comments, flames welcome ......be truthful....it will help me in the end. cheers,

Really nice Bill !! Looks to be an effective warhammer. How about a review with demos of it knocking a few targets around? Maybe a tree stump, or such?
Great to see something different here on the Forum. + 1 2 Ya.

I never want to be hit with that, no matter what kind of armor I'm wearing.

Just a personal preference, I'd throw the hammer head back just a bit, make the main head a little shorter. I really REALLY like what you've done with it. But again, I'd bring the main hammer face back closer to the shaft, more reminiscent of the Windlass English Warhammer's head length. But still, a damn fine job on this braw beastie.

thanks for the comments, karma and suggestion gentlemen. yes the spike is sharp as a needle...haven't really unleashed it against something yet....did hit my pell with it once.....nasty. Bryn, I see what you mean about the head thickness cut back.....next one......back the flea market this week-end to find more hammer heads.......

I actually think the prototype handle was better proportioned than your final handle. The new one looks too much like a modern roofer's hammer. The longer shaft yields more leverage, so more smash.
Agree with Bryn about the hammer face being too long. Might try grinding until you've got 4 sharpish points- so they really grip into your target.
Just my opinion, take it as you will, K
