I have pretty much given up on the local metal workers. I guess shan wen kia is too complex for them (not that the latest guys were willing to admit it, they just never got back to me)...
So, I'm going to make it out of leather. It won't be as pretty, but it'll be cheaper and I'll have it (and I can make it by myself). So I need to order the leather...
Just for confirmation, for the backing, 6-8 oz leather and for the scales, 12-14 oz. Right?

Sounds about right; I used something around the 12-14oz range for leather lamellar experiments myself.

Anyone know a good place to get some? I'm going to need a good bit of both weights and I want it in black and Tandy Leather Factory doesn't seem to have any of the weights I'm looking for at all in any colour...

I had heard that you could get whole hides at Brettun's? This is good if you make your own armor and/or garments.

Thanks, but, like Tandy, they don't even seem to have the weight I need in the volume I need, even patching together multiple colours and finishes. Let alone get all of it in black...

Personally I'd go with leather backing and steel lames for the armour in a fish scale pattern, surely there are websites that do lamellar armour kits?

fish-scale or diamond-scale or any number of other styles of scale Or lamellar would, indeed, be easier. Cheaper, too, no doubt.
However, I don't want to work any of those other styles.
No, Irishamericanlad, I can't get them cut at this time economically. The cheapest quote I have had is $2 per scale Just to have them cut. Forget about getting them shaped. For a guesstimated 1500 scales, that's too much. Costs less to get a set of dies made and stamp them myself. IF I can find someone to make the dies (which is where I had problems and decided to switch to leather for now).

so are you going to tool then? i bet its not a hard deal, i tooled a whole costume in dragon style scale... then smoothed the edges and painted it, i used a slightly darker color to give it depth..

It's gotten no farther since I last posted in my other thread. I haven't gotten off my backside to do it.

What would you like to learn?
Don't use 13 oz leather for scale, especially intricate scales like I am making? Definitely don't go over 10 oz for scale. Harden the bloody things.
It's a LOT of work.
Depending on what the design of your scale is, you're probably best off with a bandsaw to cut them out.
Anything else? I'm not going to share my hardening recipe. It's mine. You can go with wax or water like everyone else.

Get in touch with Springfield Leather for cheap leather. Ask for low grade 13 oz leather for armor making. You should get a side for about $90.

If you're doing scale, you REALLY don't want such heavy leather. It's practically unworkable and will be layered so thickly that even with a simple scale pattern, you're looking at 30+oz leather at any given location. That's heavy.
That was my biggest mistake.
