What are your opinions on the 59.95$ Musashi katana line (Such as the Hiryuu Katana) as light duty cutters?
Even though I want it as a display piece (it's gonna be a present for my love, actually) I like to buy swords that are at least slightly functional. That being said, she fell in love with the Musashi Hiryuu Katana. The price is certainly sexy and i've heard that these babies even handle Tameshigiri okay.
What can everyone say about this Katana line?
EDIT: Whatever you guys can say about the Musashi Zetsurin is also welcome.

I've owned the Hiryuu...it is a decent cutter for the price. Or you can spend a little more and get a Musashi Bamboo Warrior with a real hamon for under 100.00

The takeo are TH, not DH.... (or at least, that was the conclusion after the last concensus) Although i have to say- that etched hamon on them looks extremely good. Most of the 60$ line are suprisingly good, but take notice they're all 1045, which is pretty soft, and the tempering process is not exactly top-notch for that series.

No...I think the Bamboo, Mokko, and one other from the Takeo line is in fact DH. A member here has polished one out and was able to etch the hamon back.

As to the series originally inquired, they're all pretty fair for $60. I have a Zetsurin and it actually cuts (cardboard) better than my PK, but then my PK is old and has suffered some sub-par "sharpening" during its life, whereas I've not touched the edge of the Zetsurin. I did, however, put a nasty set in the Zetsurin once during a (very abusive) flex test. Stuck the tip into my floor and leaned on it until it buckled under me (took practically all my 200+ pounds to do this). Nasty bend, but at least it didn't break. I was able to mostly straighten it, but it's still not perfect. Handles and cuts fine, though.

What about the Musashi Bamboo? Is it much better than the Hiryuu?

What about the Musashi Bamboo? Is it much better than the Hiryuu? I think it is far better. Here's an old review I did on the Bamboo... /index.cgi?action=display&board=swordreviews&thread=7476&page=1

I can not speak for ALL models... but my Musashi Bamboo and Mokko are DH with real hamon. I think that Bamboo is a great 'ladies sword'... it's very light, sleek, attractive theme, and the tsuka is very slender... this is my wifes favorite sword, even over my Oni Forge swords that cost 4-5 times more.

I do not know anything worth mentioning on the Hiryuu but I can second Oni's opinion on the Bamboo Warrior. I will not argue whether the hamon is real or not, but I will say that if it is not real, it is very well done. It is a great light cutter, it has excellent balance, everything on it is tight, including the ito, which is as tight as any I've seen, and it can take some abuse.
Only complaint I had about it was when I got it the tsuba had some sort of black gunk that rubbed off on my hand. After a thorough wiping/ scrub it was fine.
Course, none of this matters too much if the one she is taken with is the Hiryuu.

I've handles the Takeo (a small tier higher on the price scale) and they are just fine. They handle nice and nimble. Haven't cut with them though but I wouldn't mind using it as a beater with confidence.
