I am going to be purchasing my first real sword sometime at the end of July. The thread can be found here /index.cgi?board=euromedieval&action=display&thread=10777&page=1 I plan on buying one of Atrim's "Maker's Mark" swords, and I would like to customize the hilt a little. I don't have much in mind, but I do know that I want to replace the pommel with something that looks like Aragorn's ranger sword's pommel. This is the pommel that I want www.christianfletcher.com/Christian_Fletcher/Custom_Work/Pages/Borderwatch.htmlIt would be nice if I could get a hilt similar as well, and maybe a crossguard, but I know that will cost a lot more. If I have to choose one thing, I want to customize the pommel. I don't want a scabbard, because I don't have the money for that, and I also don't want to get any engravings. Does anybody know how much it would cost to get the pommel, or the grip, or crossguard? I advise that you read my other thread, because it will probably answer some of your questions.

I'm currently in the process of doing my first customization and I've found out that with the right tools building a decent wooden scabbard isn't terribly hard at all. I've been following the "historic" method shown on this page: www.yeoldegaffers.com/project_scabbard.asp and all I've got left to do is to wrap it in the leather. Anyway, it's something you might want to consider if you want a scabbard without having to spend a ton of money on it.

Thank you for that link, eruialsul. I'll give you karma for the information. Unfortunately, I don't have the time for that now, although it will make a good project for some other time.

Is this all the help everyone out there has to offer?

I'd recommend emailing Christian Fletcher and asking how much it would cost to get the ATrim sword you're looking at with those customizations, if it's just guard and pommel I don't think it would cost that much but I don't really know. You could also find any machine shops in your area and ask them how much it would cost to have them make a pommel like that, it shouldn't be too hard for them unless you want something really oddly shaped. Other than that I don't know where you could get different guards and pommels except from other people who happen to have them lying around.

What eruialsul said...since you were looking at CF's site, it makes sense to ask him, the designer, about what you'd like for your sword. He takes commissions; you give him a downpayment and he works out all of the details with you so that you get exactly what you want. The guy's an artist, you can't go wrong with anything he does. Edited to add: this place probably doesn't get much traffic on the weekends as most of us are either out cutting, or living or a pleasant combo of both. Just FYI.

I am going to ask him, but I thought that some of the guys on here do customization. I wanted to check just in case any of them could provide information before I ask CF.

Well I could make you the parts, but I dont expect to be any cheaper than CF. I don't expect anyone will make you the parts any cheaper than anyone else. Making things takes a long time, and time is money.
Anyone with a lathe should be able to make you the pommel. Or if you know someone with a lathe, maybe you can ask if you can do it yourself.
The guard again, see CF, as he has done so many of them, for all I know he might just be casting them which would be easier then me spending 5 hours making you one. Again if you have an angle grinder, and if you know someone with a milling machine, you could look to make one yourself and mill the slot with their machine.

Jonathan, Brian of DBK and dand also do that sort of customization but you have to remember, you get what you pay for...you go cheap, you get crap. These guys are craftsmen, they'll stand by their work- as such, it'll cost extra but it'll be well worth it. Brenno's the Fantasy king, keep that in mind...he brings good things to life, like GE.
I'm not sure why that particular commercial just popped up, but it is apropo, don't you think?

I will end up talking to Christian Fletcher about it in the end anyways. If I can get him to make the pommel I want AND make sure that it is the same weight as the original sword's pommel, then I will buy it. If not, then I will be stuck with a wheel pommel and instead get a different grip.
