I'm planning on redoing the grips for my Windlass Arming Sword and War Sword (that one will get a new handle made as well) and I have a good number of questions. I'm planning to stitch the grip but having never done anything like this before I wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing before I got started. One of the main things I've been wondering is how difficult is it to stitch the grip on instead of gluing it? I've found guides on gluing on new grips but none on stitching them on, though I've seen guides for stitching leather onto a scabbard, is it basically the same? Historically, were all grips stitched on or were some glued instead, or do we even know?
Sorry about all of the questions, but I like to have a very clear idea of what to do before I start working on something, since I'm not very fond of making mistakes.

You could probably PM either Brian from DBK, DanD or even yeoldgaffer; I've seen Brian's and Gaffer's work and they definitely know what they're doing. Hell, Tinker, Brenno and John do swords so they have experience with grip wraps, you could try them out as well.

Some good advice above, those guys know there stuff and should be able to help you out tremendously. I will say that I personally greatly prefer a stitched anything over glued, since thread is just that little bit more permanent than adhesives tend to be, and peeling is virtually eliminated via stitching...but some people don't like the seam in their hand, either. I've done a fair bit of stitching up this and that over the years, but am having a rough time imagining how I'd go about stitching leather onto a sword handle without a huge seam...but I guess it's all in measurements and stitching style... Anywho, check out some of the customization threads by our members here and chat with some of the fellows EP ( ?) mentioned and you should get tons of good info.

Stitching is kind of a pain in the butt, gluing is much easier. Here's a link /index.cgi?board=swordcustom&action=display&thread=4495 to a very brief tutorial I did when a forumite asked me, ages ago, how this grip was done. I couldn't say if that's how you're supposed to stitch a grip, just that that's how I did it.

Thanks bortherbanzai, that's pretty much exactly what I was looking for, +1 for that.
I assume that soaking the leather first to make it more pliable as yeoldegaffer says to do in his scabbard tutorial will work in combination with your grip wrapping method, so I think that's probably what I'll try. Thanks again for the help, I'll post pictures of however it turns out (hopefully well).

Well, I've stitched it, didn't fold over the edges like brotherbanzai showed. It came out a bit crooked but not too bad. I'll get some pics up in a new thread once the whole project is finished.
As an aside, does anyone know what to put on dyed suede to keep the dye on it and not my hands?
