As I finally got myself a real medieval sword that's looking forward to do some cutting (after all, what is a medieval sword without battle-scratches?) I'm looking for cheap beach mats as I haven't done much cutting, and would like to become more experienced before I try out real tatami. www.swordsofmight.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=136 sell them extremely cheap for only 2 dollars each, but do not ship outside the US. I live i Norway and would be very thrilled if I could find mats this cheap (or slightly more expensive) that can be shipped to Norway. Anyone knows of a store who can offer this. My one hour journei through sites have failed so far

i am sure there is a pool market or something like where you could have them.

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately it is VERY unlikely that one comes across a "pool market" in Northern-Norway. I'm looking for a web-shop preferrably

How do these stack up against tatami?

I would rate these as about 3 rolled beach mats is easier to cut than 1 rolled Mugen Dachi tatami mat. 4 beach mats might be a little bit tougher than 1 tatami mat.
But that's just my opinion, based on cutting quite a few tatami, but only a very few beach mats.

Worth investing in for cutting purposes or no?

They might get some more use out of those on the US West side, with the closing of Mugen Dachi retail sales.

Honestly, i prefer using tatami mats. They are a little more expensive but offer good targets. Beach mats I find (especially in the cheaper ones) can scratch up the steel and dull the blade quicker than soaked tatami targets. Just my opinion.... Its really a personal preference but if you want tatami i usually order from www.nihonzashi.com but their shipping costs seem to have gone up so i have been ordering from Bugei.com.... That is if your not set on beach mats. The reason I suggest tatami despite what you said is because you can cut them into 1/2 mats and they are fairly easy to cut through, not to mention you double your tatami mats.

So far I've only cut tatami, and would prefer them. My sensei used to get them from Mugandachi, but has run out and doesn't want to pay for the expensive shipping from the new FL location. I might get a box of 20 myself here when I get my own sword, so I can get some cutting in. How do the tatami at Bugei compare to the ones from Mugandachi? I have been able to find anyone who has used them from Bugei, only the wara mats. Although every time I go by Bugei site, it says they are out of stock on the tatami.

;D
y'know i might just let the uk chen guys know im interested in some wara, they dont list it, but you never know...
so far ive been limited to beach mats, but im getting some omote after wacken ;D
i pay about 95p each on the scrawny little things...
would be cool to try all 3 together....

Well of course now Bugie doesn't show tatami for sale, but I swear a few weeks ago they did, right below the rolling tool. :/

gutted, the uk guys have absolutely no intention of stocking wara... looks like i may never cut a six foot mat stuck with beach mats or tatami, 2 outa 3 aint bad though a beach mat costs 1/5 of an omote mat.... i look forward to comparing them.

Bugei did have them a few weeks ago but I dont see it up anymore. I have not personally used them from Bugei but I'm very pleased with the ones from Nihonzashi. I've had a couple of duds out of a box of 20 but it was because of my rolling not the mats.
