I took my Tenchi katana just to look at it and guess what I have found - the crack on kashira. First of all I thought I haven't noticed it from the beginning, but after looking into taken photos it appeared I was wrong. This means I have cracked it. But wait a minute, how can one brake the metal. I have never dropped the sword and braking metal requires quite a force. So taking into account this and the sound kashira makes than you knock it with fingernail - it is made of plastic. Is it all the same or this just new ones that goes with such a lousy fittings? (me and my friend both got tenchi together, his kashira is also made of plastic). This is kind a bummer I can say. At least fuchi is metal...

Wow, makes me want to check my kaze fittings. I agree with you, what a bummer. IMO Cheness needs to bring their fittings up to snuff. Sorry to hear that man.

The fuchi/kashira on these are made out of zinc, which is a metal only good for melting down and poking with a stick. Basically, it is crap. Definitely not plastic, but it is just as bad. (Maybe even worse)

I doubt its plastic....
Have you actually taken it off?
Those are usually some sort of pot metal, which has a very "tin-ish" sound to it which could be likened to the sound plastic makes. But i would be especially surprised if they are plastic.
Keep us posted

It's how Cheness made up for the price. Their blades are pretty awesome but somethings gotta give. This is not new.

Never heard of cheness doing plastic kashira. Maybe it's zinc as master said. Now I'm even more at the mind that it's better getting a shirasaya than full kudogu from them. BLEH.

Apparently this is some kind of alloy as seller told me. I can't understand how such a thing could happen....

Yeah for years folks would get the tenchi or kaze in shira and then mount them.

Someone once tried to tell me that the fittings on my Kawashima Snowfall were plastic. I did small scratch tests in inconspicuous spots on the fuchi. kashira and menukis and they were all metal. They do, however , look like plastic and sound like plastic when you tap them. Cast metal is cheap.

I would have to agree, probably not plastic, but likely pot metal or zinc. But you shouldn't be terribly surprised for it being low quality, considering the price of the swords. Look at it this way, would you rather have a cheap fitting crack, or a cheap blade crack?

You are right, I really do like good quality blade. Any ideas how this crack could appear? I've never hit tsuka. Could it be from cutting (actually hitting, it was bad cut) hard plastic bottle? Like the force going all through the blade to the tsuka and then kashira? Strange strange thing . Maybe just me got unlucky with really bad quality kashira

Well, if it is some cheep pot metal it could have been extra thin at the point where it cracked... a 'stress point'... and it could have just sheered from transfered force. Wouldn't take much if it were thin and brittle enough. Bummer.

That's weird that it cracked like that. When I took off the tsuka on my tenchi Ko Katana to do a custom grip I smacked the kashira pretty hard a couple times so it got a dent in the middle. but it didn't break. Maybe your tenchi just has a really thin kashira. Mine seems to be pretty think.
