I might be killed for this but...
Is it OK to use shoelace as Ito? I ask because it is cheaper, and easier to obtain for me. ;D

Good God no.
What color are you looking for?
What is your budget?
Do you know how to wrap a tsuka?
It would be a needless waste of money to buy ito and not be able to actually complete a wrap.... but if you feel comfortable in your ability to do it, surely we as a community will be able to provide you with a better option that shoe string at a somewhat affordable price...
Besides where will you ever find a 15 foot long shoe string?

Good point actually. Shoe string is way too short. I want an orange ito on my next Katana. I do not know how to wrap, but am willing to learn. I was thinking Orange ito and Black Same (Seme? Well, Rayskin). I do not got a budget yet, but I cannot ship a money order past Canada in my new sempriniesque town.

By the time I order, they may be closed! But I will remember just in case I get an unexpected cash flow, which happens sometimes...
Do they have black ray skin as well?

I heard and it really sux. But it also doesn't sound like he is in a great big hurry to close. If he does close before you have the money there are other places that sell ito.
You also have the option of buying the cotton for around twenty bucks as opposed to the silk for forty. At worst you can get the white cotton and then get some fabric dye and experiment a bit until you get the color you want.

I get my stuff from Mike...too bad he's shutting down. I died a little on the inside.
Deffinately don't use shoelace. Not only is it bad, but it's terrible, too. *Nodnod*
For the samegawa, laquer it black after it's been applied. For the actual itomaki, go to youtube and type in my screenname. I have a couple of vids up. Not the best, but they give you an idea. Check out Thomas L. Bucks tsukamaki site, too.
