Found this in a garage. Bevel on one side. Still surprisingly sharp. My crazy packrat grandma thinks it might be worth something. Anyone know anything? What the heck would I call it?

Odd looking... reminds of of the many weird looking knives and swords that come from the Philipines...

I think the hilt resembles a bird (cockatoo?). If it's so, it may be a blade from the Philippines. Looks like it needs a lot of work removing the rust.

Dude cockatoo's are from Australia, like penguins are from Dubai ........ Stupid me Still the hilts resembles some kind of bird, and judging from the hilt alone, the blade could be from the Philippines. Probably more of a utility tool than a sword. Depending on its age, it might have some value to avid collectors.

How the hell do you figure it looks like a cockatoo? Cockies are crested and have a different beak shape. Definitely looks filipino, although no indicators I can see as to age or anything else.

The big beak makes it look like a cockatoo, which are actually in the Philippine area.

They do have species of cockatoo in the Philippines, the Red-vented Cockatoo is one (there may be others). I don't think they have any with big crests like our Sulphur-crested Cockatoos... I'm a bird-nerd As for the knife, to me it looks kinda souvenir-grade from the picture, probably from the Philippines, but my ignorance on that topic is immense... Good Luck! Cheers Marc E

Truth be told, I don't really know what the hilt resembles. It seems that whenever I read a description of a filipino blade with that particular handle, they almost always associate the hilt with the cockatoo. Anyway I found this pic in traditionalfilipinoweapon.com:

I dont think the hilt resembles anything I think its just made with hand slippage in mind, and I think it would be more a tool if its only beveled on one side, that being said Japanese Kama ........ so it was probably a good weapon when you needed it ..........

Sorry for taking so long. School's out, so I'm spending a LOT more time outside. He was in WW2. I don't know what he did or where he was. Didn't know if asking would be a good idea or not so I never did. He died a year or two ago, so I guess I lost that chance, but gramma might know.
Wow, yes, you are exactly right. Google images pulled up almost the exact same thing.
The hilt looks way more geometric than something organic.
Question now is what to do with it. Should I remove the rust? Reshape to fix the tip?

Try MAAS metal polish, I've had some pretty good luck with that back in my flea market days on antique sickles, harvest knives, and such. I wouldn't do too much for reshaping it could affect the overall value. However, if the sentimental value is more important to you than monetary value than treat it how you feel is best. Linseed oil for the handle though.
