This is a thread I'm starting for the time I have enough money to buy new swords. I'd like my next purchase to be a daisho, which I will use for iai and of course cutting. Any sword considered should be DH. The ones I had in mind are these:
-Kris cutlery 26A& wakizashi- Tough blades, tsuka and nakago follow the sori, geometric yokote, suguha hamon (I like suguha), no bo-hi.
-Kensei kiyomaru daisho: better finish and quality (correct if I'm wrong), bo hi (easier to practice iai), cosmetic yokote, tsuka follow the sori (again, correct if wrong).
That's pretty much the swords I came up with. I don't really have a budget, but let's say 1000 USD for the daisho, tops.

Hanwei swords comes in both katana and wakizashi, so if you haven't already ruled them out, take a look. Lots of choices there.
If I were to buy a daisho, I'd probably go for Hanwei.

Yea Hanwei has some nice sets you might like based on your choices above. They are a bit higher price range, but Bugei usually sells Wakizashi versions of their swords as well.

Yeah I know hanwei makes fine swords (owned 3, now 2), but I'd like to try something else. The katana I had\have from hanwei just doesn't feel "right".

Good call, flashingsteel...I'd been eyeing their Ronin line for the last few years. Funny thing, on eBay a few years back someone was auctioning off a daisho; starting bid was $25,000. I do understand that real nihon-to can run as high or higher but there were no certifying marks or documentation that I could discern. Forgot what happened with that.
OP, good luck in your search; I second the suggestion of Last Legend.

Which Hanwei's have you handled? More info on that might help direct your search. I'm a big Hanwei fan myself. If $1000 is really your range you could get Shinto, Wind & Thunder or at least three or four other models if you want just Kat & wak.
Also, have you ruled out cheness? They have some matching sets as well.

pogo is right with a 1000 dollar budget theres quite a few things you could get... i mean a PPK daisho is only 400 and htings just go up from there. the LL one i mentioned i think you can get the three peice set for 600 something. and again pogo is right maybe let us know if there are any specific parameters you have to help us with whatever suggestions we're making. i've handled primarily LL and Oni forge and loved em both. and i've had a few hanwei which i also loved. I"d personally probably go for the kensei models based on my experience with the oni forge swords i've had.

Pogo- I've handled a hanwei musashi classic (old, no bohi model), shinto classic, PPK, and re-wrapped PK. Also yeah, I ruled out cheness because their swords looks bad to me.
flashingsteel- a daito with 10-12 inch tsuka, and 28-29 inch (2.4-2.45 shaku) nagasa. The wakizashi doesn't matter much.

Check this link forums.swordforum.com/showthread.php?t=95772&highlight=mono+no+saruI don't know if I would actually cut with this daisho becuase it's so nice, but this is a good deal. I own a mono no saru and it's an extremely high quality sword. It would be good sword for light targets. The blades are made of folded swedish powdered steel so they should be pretty durable. If I had the money I would buy the Wak so I could have a compete set.

I find this topic interesting. If we're in a forum for good sub-$300 blades, what would the price be for a good set of daisho, sub-$300 prices for single blades considered? ($600? --Edward

I would expect to pay $500 for a daisho appropriate for this forum's guidelines. $300 for a sword ($300 could get a very nice sword, too) and $200 for the wak (a damn nice wak).
Cheapest daisho I can think of is Hanwei's PK, $170-ish for the kat (dai) and about $150-160 for the wak (sho) and they go up from there.

I would recommend Chenness Kaze set. The blades are really good, maybe you would need to change sageo and ito. At least for me brown fittings doesn't look nice. And this set wouldn't be very expensive. You will use it for practice so I believe it not very good idea to use very nice looking swords, at least I would be scared not to damage them. Only my 2 cent.

i think kawashima has a daisho for like 250 and they seem to get good reviews for their price points.

I see Dynasty Forge has a wak in their Musha class. $210. So that's about $450-500 for a Musha class Daisho. Look in Wiwingtis store.
