If you read my review on the Edo Katana (bought from SOM). You know that I wasn't really happy with the ito quality. So I decided to do a little customization on this one and let me tell you it looks a heck of a lot better. First I removed the old tsuka and what do I find (just like you might find in most cheaper priced katana? Yep..cracked tsuka...oh well didn't like the shape anyways and the same was just horrible. So, I had to make a new one. For this one though I decided I wanted a rikko (hourglass) shaped tsuka, but I didn't want it to be overwhelming. I wanted it a bit subtle. Also, I decided to go with katate maki, as well as with black same with the king node. I kept the fuchi and kashira and dumped the rest. I didn't really like the menuki (plain dragon ones that they always use) and well the tsuba was just too damn big. So I dumped that as well. I wanted a much slimmer tsuba that would kind of matched the color of the fittings (silver). I got pretty close with a gunmetal color which works well imho. This is my 2nd attempt at tsukamaki, first time doing katate though. I know I messed up on getting the last knot on the right side. DOH! and I probably did one too many diamonds, but I had no choice (same king node was a higher). I think I spend about 60-70 dollars on ito(bought extra from flea bay buyer), tsuba and same. I already had the crane menuki. For the most part it came out well, I think. Ito is a bit shoe lace stringy, but it looks pretty good actually and the feel is good as well.
