I know that there are pine tar based coatings for both wood and metal used in marine applications. (I'm hearing often involving linseed oil, japan dryer and/or turpentine.)
Seems like it might be a better alternative to blueing, both for darkening and rustproofing.
Anybody here tried it yet, either on sword hilt furniture, or metal in some other context? (Any sailors here?)

A good blueing and occasional oiling does the job, and is probably cheaper than an applied coat of stuff which will probably chip and need reapplication every so often.
If it's for marine equipment, then it's to deal with CONSTANT exposure to salt-air. I highly doubt any swords are even used often enough in that environment. And for storage, renaissance wax, which is a good protective substance that can be wiped clean for practice-cutting.

I personally cannot thing of a single instance involving darkening sword hardwear where I would prefer a coating to blueing or other methods... thats just me. If you think you would like it... try it.
For long term rust proofing I think LPS #3 is as good as anything

Didn't ask for the hypotheses of someone who's never tried it. Asked for the empirical experiences of anyone who has. This comment was not called for, this is a PUBLIC forum, hence anyone can comment on any topic anytime. If you cannot handle this in a polite manner, and not learn to sift through the answers yourself then maybe you might need to start your own forum or learn to handle things with a bit more courtesy. Dammit HR calm the semprini down

Now let's get back to the original topic, IF everyone can cooperate and have a touch thicker skin and a touch more self control. If not I can lock the thread or delete it outright.
