I can't find any images of the Russian warriors from the film, so I can't be really certain, and I didn't pay very close attention to them in the movie, but I believe it was supposed to be a kind of scale armour. Diamond shaped rather than tear-drop.
In any case, scale armours were real and I believe the Rus' were among the heaviest users of it.

indeed any screenshots of the armour are no where to be found...saw one trailer where u catch a glimpse but its mainly just a helm shot..im guessing the diamond shape aspect is what intially caught my eye...but overall just seemed like some great lookin armor..my google skills could yield lil results ..as the search engine tends to think all russian armor comes with tracks and fires huge shells..but thanks for info...may help with further investigation

I just saw the movie and even though it's a little late I thought I'd say I recognized it and have some info for you. It's called a zertsalo, basically like a char-aina. It was imported to Russia via the Turks. At first I thought it was some kind of scale or lamellar, but after a good look I saw the sections were solid plates that were sort of scalloped for decoration. EDIT: Oh, and yes, it is accurate (by Hollywood standards) for the time of Ivan the Terrible.
