It is not a true WW2 gunto, it is a Chinese knock off.

Agreed with Brian... don't buy it , it is NOT a WWII gunto or showato... it is a counterfeit.

^ True that. That "signature" doesn't really say anything, just a meaningless gathering of kanji.

I don't know whether he is lying or not, but I still recommend against buying that - strongly. The same is CLEARLY artificially aged, the tsuba is of poor craftmenship and I've NEVER seen a hakabi like that on a Gunto.
Do not buy this. Save up for a real one if you are truly interested.
Thanks, -Tajima

I too used to be impressed by fake WWII katanas. They become easier to spot once you have spent a little time in person with the real deal. I don't own any but I have seen them up close in person. Just like anything else, as your knowledge grows your eye becomes more sophisticated. I also find that the suba is usually a dead give away for a fake. For some reason we are asked to equate piss poor paint job with antique. I like this site too. It just has some pictures of WWII katanas that you can view to get an idea of what they look like. quanonline.com/military/military_reference/japanese/japanese.htmlI am sure your friend believes that to be a real true WWII katana but it looks like a cheap reproduction to me.

Well or even just correctly written? Hell no, i couldn't recognise what the hell is even written there. Stay away from it, this is just BAD quality, even for a fake.

Yes the fist strand of ito maki for the wrapping on the handle is started on the wrong side as well the material for the wrap is wrong and looks to be a cotton if I seen the whole handle I could probablly see the crossovers are wrong as well. The same has been aged and is the wrong color. And even bad smiths or arsenal and military stamps for inspection never were found on the habaki, they should have some signs of a chippy chisel stroke to make the signature on the tang as most did have a stamp of approval from the governmet or a arsenal mark found above the signature or belove it at the bottom if it was a gendai made blade. This is not a real sword and thier are a lot of them on the chinese market.
