So, per an earlier posting, here: /index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=10141 I threatened to order a United Cutlery katana ;D. Well, it came in the mail a few days ago . I ordered a United Black 1045 carbon-steel Shikyo katana. Initial impressions: Definitely *not* traditional; the tsuba, fuchi and kashira have more of a 90's-era tribal tattoo look. The blade has a double bo-hi on both sides-- I think this is called a 'so-hi', correct? Also, the tsuka-ito is real leather; given the cost of the weapon I found that to be a pleasant surprise. A more in-depth review will be forthcoming in the next two weeks or so . --Edward

I am very curious about this upcoming review. That buy, that's really ''taking the plunge''

Indeed... a very risky purchass even *I* would not have had the balls to make... and I've bought random katana on Ebay before to review, so thats saying something. I look forward to your thoughts, impressions, and hopefully lots of pics of the weapon.

Indeed... a very risky purchass even *I* would not have had the balls to make... and I've bought random katana on Ebay before to review, so thats saying something. Well, as I've stated before, United Cutlery has a bad rep on this board-- so, I'm interested in seeing why . The 'United Black' line is really pushing that they're using carbon steel in their new blades, so this is definitely something to check out. Plus, I found the non-traditional designs of the 1045 Shikyo and 1060 Yoru interesting enough to warrant more research (ie. the Shikyo's furniture has that 'tribal tattoo' look, and the Yoru's saya has a decorative string binding and modern-looking dragon stencil on it, for starters). I'm going to state here that I'm not going to buy every disparaged low-end POS that's found on this board, though . If it appeals to me, I'll take on the challenge and see if the product is worth the money-- or if the bad rep is well-deserved. I'm taking one for the team, and all that ;D. The only way to know if this blade is worth it, is for someone to take the risk. --Edward

The only way to know if this blade is worth it, is for someone to take the risk. Indeed. That was my thinking with the Ebay Katana. Every now and then you gotta take a risk if you wanna find the really good sleeper deals out there.

Do these United katana have any mekugi...or is the nakago glued/screwed to the tsuka? I look forward to your review.

even if they did use 1045 1060 etc... if they didn't bother to do a good heat treat on em they might as well have just stuck with the stainless steel

Do these United katana have any mekugi...or is the nakago glued/screwed to the tsuka? I don't know about the 1060, but the 1045 does have mekugi-- it's double-pegged. I'm going to see about possibly removing the tsuka to get a look at the tang. --Edward
