Oh, that would be disappointing if that were the case...I've wanted that spearhead for a while now. Their Viking handaxe (the one with the Dragon design on the blade) is most likely a wall hanger only, unless you wouldn't mind damaging the design in order to sharpent the blade.
What board was it that said it was too frail for contact?

on the episode of Deadliest Warrior with the viking vs samurai they threw spears with the older antiqued viking lugged heads on them and they held fast and had good penetration all the way through cut log targets.
I'm getting one sent with my Tinker Viking sword so I'll let you know once I get my hands on it and once I mount it to a shaft I'll do a review but from watching deadliest warrior it looked like it could take a fair amount of punishment, its got that very solid raised fuller down the blade and the engraving looks like its been cut in

I have both the Hanwei lugged viking spear and the viking throwing spear. I was not happy with them. They are actually hollow inside, not just through the ridge, and got a very blunt, rounded egde (2 mm). If they are sharpened for use, they may break in the sides. They can't compare to my solid blacksmith made spearhead at all. So yes, for very light use or for display.

This one www.3riversarchery.com/product.asp?i=4356 is supposed to be solid and does have the right look . It appears though to be small enough to be classed as a javelin . I have just ordered one and will give a review . I still have not found a full size Viking spear I am satisfied with .

That one looks just like a spearhead I've got, I actually think it's the same. It's so rugged I wouldn't mind puttin' it through a car door.

Well my order is already being processed so I'll guess I'll find out if the Hanwei one can be used functionally, I'll even try to put an edge on it to see if it can accomadate it

Hey Ichiban, with the hanwei lugged viking spear is it hollow all the way down the ridge or is the actual blades themselves hollow as well ? if the ridge socket is hollow but the blades solid if should stand up to some light penetration (just wouldnt ram it through car doors or into wooden targets) it might stand up to hay bale throwing and melee stabbing.

The blades are hollow too, very strange. Seems it's made in two parts and hammered or welded together.

Mine's hafted and won't come off easily, but yes, I assume it's just the same. But since it has another shape, it's more functional. Though the penetraion ability would be greater if I could sharpen it.

I told Ryan Whittlinger of KoA about it and he says the Viking Spear Head piece seems fairly solid, he's even had customers ask them to sharpen it for them and they did with no problems, he's under the impression its just the socket thats hollow, how long ago did you get yours Ichiban, pre antique when it came with more engraving highlights and matching buttcap or post antique version thats back to shiny ......... When I get it I'm gonna tip sand into it and see how much it can hold, should give me an idea of how much space is inside.

I bought it recently from UK, it's the shiny version. Newest I assume. I used a bendable LED-light which goes into the socket. Its hard to see using a normal flashlight. I thought it felt light for such a big head, and wanted to see how long the socket went in.

Here is an interesting throwing spear from A&A . www.armor.com/pole227.html It is listed as Greek , but I see no reason it could not pass for Viking .

The regular A&A javelin would be more viking style, but cut the shaft in half, they carried only very short javelins, they were virtually oversized darts, very effective in hunting or hurling before melee. I wish they did a more carolingian viking spear with lugs .......

Ichiban , have you checked your Hanwei throwing spear for hollow blade yet? I may buy another spearhead this week . The Hanwei is one of the choices

Nope, it's completely stuck on the haft. Can't take it off without risk of ruining it. I assume it's just the same as the lugged spear.

My hanwei cleared customs yesterday so should be coming soon, I'm seriously gonna use a hammer and nail on the blade, if it penetrates, no good, if it just scratches ........ its gonna be mounted for function
