That was a very good reference Alvin.
It would appear that Claymore does just mean sword.
With regard to the large two-handers the full name seems to be "claidheamh da laimh". dà = two làmh = hand This comes out to "Claymore Two Hand".
broadsword: claidheamh mor
backsword : claidheamh cuil
basket-hilt sabre: claidheam crom

yea i removed it, because apparently this section is about naysaying and talking semprini about everyone elses designs, and since hardly anyone liked it, i took it off, the funny thing is, that the sword i plan on making to "USE" is not going to be nearly 4 inches wide with a 7 inch tip, that was to hang on the wall, but the other blade will still be at least 2 inchest with a little over a 3 inch tip, and it will still be 7 feet long, and seriously, Kajim if you think ill get stabbed in the face before i have time to swing, please, by all means, come and try, i have a 7ft sword i made out of PVC, arrow head tip and all, ill be glad to teach you a thing or two. especially since you like to naysay so much about peoples fighting techniques when you have no idea what i'll even be doing. its too hard to put into words how i fight with a greatsword. but really, if you want to come spar, please come do so. you seem to think my weapon is impractical, come and make me look stupid. we can record it and post our videos here, then we can decide if the design sucks.....fair enough? you can come too Fallen. seriously i thought this forum was known for having "friendly" people on it. but please feel free to talk as much semprini as you want about my designs and me, after all, this is the internet...

As the dojo I am returning to now does a lot of naginata and katana training, I can say that a yari or naginata in the hands of someone of equal skill will give that person an advantage over a single katana. Part of the advantage is reach and another is leverage. You can hit them from further and a lot harder (even to the point of going right through their defence). Even with a jo or bo, if you know how to swing it from near the end, you can have an amazing amount of power and reach (I've hit at almost 10ft just trying to get the feel for a full swing while holding near the end of one). With a little skill, you can still pull the long weapons in fast to defend against someone diving in to close the range. A third advantage is the ability to use both ends of the weapon which leads to more varied attacks and, in some ways, a faster series of attacks. Take, for example, someone who sweeps a katana blade out of position with the blade of the naginata...if they continue the sweep, the tail of the naginata often will come to bear before the katana can get back to a defensive position...a tail strike to the head can allow enough time for the finishing blow to come around before the defender can recover. Shy of projectile weapons, I have to agree that the pole weapons have an advantage when user skill is equal. Tsafa, I definitely agree with you on the daggers. I've seen someone go dagger-dagger against someone running case and win for just the reason you mention....tangled the rapiers and got a short blade free faster for the "kill." Well, I have over 15 years of experience with Martial Arts, 14 years of real Weapons Martial Arts [not that Kendo crap]. I've fought with almost every Weapon you mention, and against them. My favorite Weapon is a "bastard sword". I fought numerous times against every Kind of opponents and almost won every battle .
The sword is the most versatile and best all around weapon, and that's why it is so popular throughout all cultures.
A spear might have more range and stabbing is difficult to block, but a sword can cut the spear head off.
Short range weapons like nunchaku or kame are faster than the sword but have a lack of range.
Hammers and Axes can be cut in half by the sword [their handles] and they need power and time to be swung.
An arrow can be blocked with the sword, if you are a master of swordsmanship.
Morning Stars with chains are difficult to be handled and blocking a strike is quite impossible.
I don't see the big difficulty in breaking a tonfa defense when using fake strikes curved blows or interceptings.i designed my sword to have all the strong points of other weapons, and none of their weaknesses (being able to have the dangerous part cut off, or broken.) if anything, my sword will be a straight up weapon breaker, and just as qouted if a katana weilder cannot block a yari, there is no freakin way they are blocking my claymore. nuff' said.

Yeah, same as a sword against a glorified crowbar, which is essentially what this design was. It might sound tough, or tough-semprini-y, but if you cannot handle opinions then do not ask for them, and when you get ones you don;t like learn to brush them off instead of take things so personal.
