I don't own any, but I have handled the production oxtail dao. It's a great sword, and since he has a bit of an over stock, he's selling them for $200 each. I don't know how long the shipping would be since he will be able to deliver my sword straight to my step himself.

He's usually pretty prompt in getting back to you. Wish I could help more, but my jian from Garrett is a custom job. -- Richard

Wish I could help also, but mine is also a special order. Granted it's nothing too special, just some different fittings and a longer blade length (it's basically a han jian design), but it isn't one of the standard ones he offers. I'm assuming that the standard production swords he has in stock would show up much faster however, since he has them in stock already. They also are well balanced and light, at least from what he told me when I asked him about them.
Still, as Glaciersteel said, it's best to ask him directly. He's very good at answering any questions you might have.

It took less than 2 weeks for my Da Dao to arrive from Canada . I am a bit busy so I did not get a chance to put it to good use. The craftmanship of this da dao is superb with well balance and excellent fitting.

Oh ho ho, if you look, you'll find I've already posted in that thread ;D I was referring to swordsage since the han dao pictures garret has up look pretty nice, but I'd like to see bigger pictures of a jian version. Although it sounds like it hasn't arrived for him yet.

Actually, I don't have that sword yet, and I'm still waiting for Garret to send me a pic of the sword. But as soon as I get it, I'm be sure to post it up here.

I'm interested in doing something similar so I'd like to see what kind of cost length additions and the like add to the sword.

I'm interested in doing something similar so I'd like to see what kind of cost length additions and the like add to the sword. Not much really. I asked for a longer blade (32"... would have made it longer, but he said that would bring it too much towards the two handed range, and while I didn't mind that at all, I did want to still effectively wield it with one hand as well as two), and fittings that were more identical to the one that Zheng Wu uses for his Han Jian, rather than the ones we see at Garret's site. I'm really hoping it came out well: I wanted a nice long, sleek, but elegant looking sword, and the Han Jian tends to look the part, at least from the pics I've seen of it. Oh yes, the price: $299 before shipping.

Very cool, I'd likely get mine something crazy like 36-40 inches, since I already have a 1 handed Jian. I'm pretty torn between the tang and the han.

Sorry to hear that your dao didn't turn out right. My jian was great.... the only problem that I had was the scabbard fittings. This was easily rectified. My jian is very sharp, straight out of the box. The only handle flaw that I found was that the bamboo tang pin (the handle has the brass tube pin for tassel, but also has a bamboo pin closer to guard) is placed at an angle as if it were installed on katana. The handle is wood, not wrapped, so it didn't need to be at angle.... but that is just cosmetic... I purchased for functionality, and combat readiness. Cosmetic issues are back burner when it comes to that in my book. As for your sword, it sounds like functional issues. Hopefully Garrett helps you out with that. He seems to be fair man. All of us Jin-Shi fans (I hope I speak for "us") are sorry to hear of your problem, as all of the reviews that I have read are positive. My only real issue was that a sword, or sheath has no business with glued fittings. The fittings should be rolled or pinned to the wood, as was the ones on my sifu's pricey jian, given to him by his sifu. Good luck on settling these issues. Hope it turns out well.

Your issues with the Jin shi swords also occur with the much more expensive Huanuo swords too.
Making the handle straight in line with the blade often does not happen well with modern replicas, I've noticed often 2-4 degrees out of true for many swords. Interestingly some antiques have this too so it's not just a modern thing.
Scabbard wood cracking may be a climate issue. Less humid, wood shrinks and cracks. I live in the same city as Garret and some of the scabbards Philip Tom has made for me get tight in winter and loosen up in summer (original dimensions) it's just something you learn to live with. You also have to consider, for the price you're paying the manufacturer's may not be properly curing the wood, once again this also happens with more expensive replica swords too.
'Tinny' fittings is quite common in modern replicas as well. Only Huanuo consistently makes solid shall we even say beefy fittings.

Just finished talking to a friend who's into wood. He saw the DF katana thread int he review section and basically said 'that stuff's untreated'.
I bet most of the china stuff are like that.

Most wood scabbards will probably be untreated on the inside.
I would imagine that to seal the inside, you'll have to not glue the two scabbard halves, and seal/lacquer the inside, then glue it.
One could spray at the inside or pour in some lacquer and rotate the scabbard a bit to have the clear coat cover the inside more evenly, but it won't be nearly as good, naturally.
