This is me doing the Chen Pan-ling taichi sword form. I filmed it in a park here in Taipei, Taiwan.
Does anyone else have videos of their CMA sword practice?

I have a couple on my harddrive, but they are horrible. When I can get recorded with a better camera, I'll put one up, as I'd love to see some real experts critique my form and give me pointers for improvement.

+1 for an awesome video, I hope to start Tai Chi soon when the local instructor I found returns from wintering in Mexico. location always seems to be my problem. I lived in Georgia most of my life and drove just over 2 hours one way, twice a week to get to the Shinkendo dojo I studied at till I just wasn't able to do it anymore between work and family. I've searched for the 2 years I've been here till I finally found a qualified tai chi instructor and he's actually only 20 minutes away.((once he gets home from Mexico that is ,LOL))

Nice vid. I would have liked if the camera was a little closer so I can see the detail.

If I put the camera closer, I wouldn't have been able to do the entire form within the frame. It extends far to the right. I would have gone off camera. It was difficult to film and that was my fourth performance that day. Trying to get it right. Next time I'll get someone else to film me.

OK, finally got something up for you guys to laugh it:
I wish I had a better camera and a better angle, but this is the best I can do with what I have right now. Hopefully I'll have some better footage for you guys later.
Feel free to let me know what needs working on, practice-wise.

Sword sage, Looks better than some of my practices lately. I've been slacking on my sword work the last few months to concentrate on hand. By the way, what size is your wooden Jian? In the video it almost looks a bit to short for you.
I have to break my forms into parts also to do them inside. It sucks, but it's just what we have to do I guess. Cool performance even if it wasn't, as you say, you best work. Better than me by far.

Thanks for the kind words guys.
Yep. that wooden sword is definitely short for me, at least it feels that way. I've always trained with Jian that are actually around 30" to 32" inches in length. Unfortunately most wooden jian seem to stay at the traditional length of 28". I do have one that"s at 30", but it's not made well for practice.
When I'm no longer at my broke phase, I think a purchase at Raven Studios might be in order.

I've been drooling over her #103 CMC Jian for a while now. My wife bought me a 28" wooden Jian when I started training is sword form (Beijing 32) and it is way to short for me also. If I follow the rule of thumb that the pommel of the sword is supposed to reach the Dantian than I need something with about a 32" blade. Hanwei's Adam Hsu 32" would be a perfect fit, I just don't like the Ming style hilt. Anyway that was a very cool practice you posted.

Out of curiousity, does anyone know the quality of the Raven Studio weapons? They seem extremely expensive for training swords. I mean sure they are balanced and weighted properly but are they worth the price that is being charged? I have been looking for good training weapons as they can be hard to find.

I don't have any personal experience with her weapons myself, but I know several Taiji instructors (to the famous Great River Taoist center) who swear by her weapons. She also gets a strong recommendation from the ARMA. Her reputation justifies such prices although they are steep. However, I was quoted a total price of $154 for two custom pieces awhile back (a 32" blade Jian with a Purple Heart hilt, and an all hickory specialty training machete) and that included shipping so I don't find her unreasonable. However, as I said I don't have any personal experience with her products yet.

A very short rough clip of me trying to create a sword form. I have not decided what the final movements should be, so there is quite a bit of hesitation, and yes, I'm using a wooden Jian that's way too short for me.

I recently met an instructor for a style called tai chu. i am not familiar with that, and was told that it is a variant form of tai chi. is any one familiar with this style?

Hey swordsage. i just rewatched the video of your practice. first i would like to say, "not bad at all, my friend." also there is nothing wrong with mixing it up with a free style. even if you say you havent got the whole form down yet in that vid.... i think a few guys might not want to mess with you.
now about that editing you do. #1 how do you dub the text over your vids? #2 where did you get those cool grove sounds. it reminds me of thebackground music in some of the older martial arts movies.
