I have to admit I wouldnt mind one of Hanwei's Rapiers at some point, I always thought your one looked a little gaudy and that one like the solingen more subtle but looking at all the "in flesh" pics of yours its definetly the most attractive and looks solid in the guard n blade

just wondering is it peened or screw threaded ?? if screwed I'm wondering what its tang looks like (then again rapiers arent supposed to take tons of stress but curiousity)

^^ What Brissybeater said. This puts a new light on that sword. much more attractive than the pics I've seen on retail sites.
I'm betting the pommel is threaded.

Threading is fine on a rapier. Even darkwood rapiers are threaded. That actually looks pretty nice and promising. Might pick one up to have a rapier around. I keep going I'm gonna get a darkwood rapier so I have a rapier and then I can't justify the cost for a sword type I'm not really interested in so I constaly have no rapier . Same thing with a mortuary sword hehe. So maybe the hanwei mortuary and rapier is the answer to this viscious cycle .

Well we all suffer the "Its not my particular style but I would like to own one just to say I do" ........ and I suppose the hope it might spurn a new interest ......... I wouldnt mind getting this one cause the price is reasonable and would love the matching main gauche with it, beautifull display piece and would be a truely "lightning death" blade ......... ahem not that I'd skewer anyone .......... I think "thrusting targets/excercises" are underrated ........ my personal fun with friends: Thrust Till Bust Games: 1) Draino- See how many thrusts you can run through a gallon milk jug before the water drains out (the first has to be at the very bottom side) WITHOUT knocking it off, 1 point per hole 2) Fruit Salad - Get pieces of fruit and gently toss to one another at head height (being safe and respectfull) and try and skewer it mid air, 1 point apples, 5 point strawberries, 10 points grapes ....... the fruit must skewer and stay on blade. 3) Dangling Donut - Donut dangling on a line of string, you must thrust through the hole and hold your arm extended for assessment, if you go through the hole without hitting the cake you get 5 points, if you hit the cake without it breaking off 1 point, if it breaks away from the string 0 points. Winner first to 100 ........ there is fun to be had with thrusters, rapiers and light sabres ......... you could do it bigger with spears (water cooler bottles for draino, melons and pumpkins for fruit salad, donut I dont know). In the process of doing something with cutting, we just get distracted with all the bottles and none left before constructive thinking takes hold

The Hanwei rapier's are threaded. Like Cold Napalm said, thats not so bad for a rapier. In fact, in some ways it's a bonus because Hanwei sells varrious rapier blades... includding button tip and rounded tip. So you can have your true rapier and, if you wish to fence with it just swap out the blade. Then put yours back when your done... kinda cool. Brissy: I recently got the solingen you mentiond... and will b putting up a review of it very soon... so look for that to see if you like it better. brian: My solingen came with the same burr on the tip as yours... must be a problem for them. I think this being your first rapier your scores are a little high in all catagories... but I welcome you to the wonderfull world of rapiers! I love em! They *WILL* take some getting used to tho. When you mentioned misjudging the length of the sword and nailing the wall I laughed. I have a friend who is very short, only a little above 5 ft tall. She tried to re-sheath my solingen rapier, and she couldn't do it! Holding the sword in one hand and the tip of the scabbard in the other, and with her arms stretched out all the way she could not get the tip of the sword into the scabbard. It was hillarious. ;D

Maybe we can start a SBG timed trial...or some other contests .

Hey Brissybeater, cool games! Reminded me of when I used to fence, and we'd sometimes hang a tennis ball from the ceiling at about chest height, set it swinging, and then lunge and try to hit it square on. For a real challenge we'd use a golfball... You could do the same thing with fruit and use your point system. Hmmm, when my Hanwei mortuary finally arrives (any...day....now...) I might have to give it a thorough thrust-test. And try to get the video function on my camera to work I must say, the Bone-Handled Rapier looks much better than I expected. I prefer a more cut-and-thrust style, myself, but that is one handsome sword! Cheers Marc E

Thing I like about the rapier is as a real world weapon if you had to use it today against a punk with a knife or bat or whatever it would be a real contest winner, keep light on your feet, avoid and just a group of quick painfull thrusts to hands, forearms, face, shoulders etc any target of oppurtuinity would have them yeilding so quick before you broke a true sweat ........... I appreciate the "civilian refinement" of the weapon ......... must of kept a man pretty safe in the period if he adapted outside the fencing saloon ..........

;D Yes its threaded. I almost got the solingen rapier, but this one was a little cheaper. Maybe the solingen will be my next rapier purchase!

Cold: have you considered one of the strongblade tempered rapiers? Yeah...But then I saw the close up of the hilt. Pretty fugly...and the hanwei one is not that much more for a much better rapier. I have seen hanwei rapiers and the mortuary and was quite pleased with what I saw.

Brian, nice review. I've often looked at Hanwei's swept-hilt rapiers with interest. Lots of good pictures too. +20 Review Points.
