Huh... VERY weird looking... It doesn't LOOK like it would hold up well to use... but it says it's designd to be used, so who knows?

....but "its the closest you can get to sparring with a real katana!"...no bruising!....wait Pretty lame IMHO Im not a katana guy but if I saw this for Euro swords Id laugh too. Blunt steel or nothing for me.

Blunt steel or nothing for me. Uhh... I'm assuming when you spar with blunted steel weapons you are waring some form of armour. When I used to practice martial arts and we would spar with shinai, we were waring nothing but our gi's... so blunted steel would have been a BAD idea.

Oh yeah, these guys. I ran across a few stands selling them when I went to Anime USA back in...was it October? Anyway, yeah, no thanks. I'm sure armor is to be worn with steel blunts, even wooden wasters, or perhaps they're just really, really good at blade control? I sure wouldn't trust the other guy even with a shinai...

Doesn't change the fact that it looks ridiculous. I want to see full force sparring, badly. I really want to see if this can actually hold up, but I'd still prefer a normal bokken for control and asthetics. I wouldn't want that in my collection even if it was given to me.

I'd give it a shot. shinai are odd for me because I'm used to using my boken and fake katana so the strait edge is odd to me.

I suddenly recall the few times a friend of mine and I held sparring matches with two bokken I'd had (gave one to another friend when I moved). We went "full force," but pulled the blows last-minute. For two guys who'd trained in other martial arts previously and practiced fighting "full force" without hitting "full force" these matches were quite interesting. The worst injury either of us ever got was a bruised knuckle or two and I think I might have caught his throat once (very lightly, mind) on a thrust I almost forgot to pull. I can't imagine the two of us with these things... I guarantee we'd be hurt.

A Keikogi and Hakama won't protect you from that monster!

Yeah, when we were using bokken, we knew what we were dealing with. (wow, that's a lot of w's...) I can see us with these things... "Hey, these are designed to be safer for actual contact sparring! Let's give it a try!" *whack* "...Are you okay? ...Heloooo~? ...Crap..." After all, who wears safety equipment? (my ol' kenpo class actually very seldom used the stuff, unless there was a local tournament coming up, then we'd get ourselves used to the idea of being padded...but never any protection save the head, hands, and feet. Though the tourneys did require a cup, so that was a given in those cases...) These things...I see going either way. The people who know what they're doing will benefit from the idea of edge orientation, if nothing else, the rest...will probably be hospitalized.

I used to study Kempo among other styles... and also regulary particpated in full contact tournaments and free sparing sessions with local dojos. Saw a guy get his cup shattered at one tourney... a horrific moment that will stay with me (and him) forever.

Yeah, I was never fond of the idea of wearing a cup. It was tight, bulky, and restrictive. Not to mention a hit to the groin is a hit to the groin, there's no stopping it, you're going down. As we said in my school, "well, you should have blocked it." This was many, many years ago. I rather miss it.

I am done with injuries, after my accident I kinda became a knife/sword safety advocate, no way would I ever use one of these, nor would I recommend doing so! That, and they are rather cheap, I'm sure it is going to give under the weight of full force katas, or even through regular practice. Hmm...Maybe my next injury will be a concussion.

This kind of made me laugh, I have no idea what they are crapping on about with a rolling thrust parry.
Also a shinai can knock you unconscious or kill you especially in full contact fighting.

=/ .... i think it looks , ....well dumb .... full force sparring is cool but if you dont got any bruising to show for it its not worth it ...just not worth it for cool alone i'll stick to my normal boken thanks.... and once in a great while my blunted steel swords (full force,{hurts alot yes}) but that thing ? my wall hanger harry potter sword could probly cut that thing >.>....(its a sharp POS lol =P but im mostly kidding.....and the wall hanger was a gift btw >.>....) my finaly opinion.... Buy it ? No. keep it if someone gave it to me ? yes but i would purposely abuse it.... like it ? ...i give it a 10 for creativity but other than that ...no i dont like it lol. =D and thats all i have to say on that thing....

Um ronin, that katana is made of bamboo just like a shinai so of course you could cut it, but it is designed for full contact sparring like shinai. A shinai is a lethal weapon in the right hands. One of my instructors used to do kendo and he and I would spar, I ended up with some lovely bruises but then anytime I did any type of sparring with him he would beat the living crap out of me. It actually helps to have someone who will go hard at you to help your conditioning.

Looks like something my Grandma would've like to have had for a 'whippin' branch'. Ouch!
