Well after the first batch of cutting, some of the paint came off. Like debbie and I said, the finish is pretty flimsy. Anyways it's zinc alloy underneath. In fact it looks just like the zinc alloy the use for the charcoal black tsuba line. Which means underneath the tacky gold paint is a fairly sturdy black coat on it. In fact I would have been a lot happier if they just skipped the paint all together and left that black finish alone hehe .

Great review, Mahoney. +1 Seems you can't hardly beat a Musashi for a good low price kat. I got one more than a year a ago and it's still holding up really good. I put it thru it's paces too.

Nice review Debbie! Your pictures (especially of the hamon) are really well shot... Good looking sword too,... You must have been on Santa's "good list" P.S. A little sand paper should fix that blemish on the throat of the saya no problem.

I recently picked up one of these from Musashi Swords as a Christmas present for a family member. I have to ditto everything the djmahoney wrote.
The fittings are a simple but solid. Ditto the tsuka wrap which was even and very tight. The blade shipped under a coat of packing grease which made it really ugly, but it cleaned up easily and looks beautiful with just a light coat of 3-in-1 oil. The hamon is nice and lively. The saya was snug with no rattles and had a nice even gloss finish with no obvious cracks or flaws. I like the balance (mine also seemed around 5 inches from the tsuba).
About the only bad thing I can say is that the habaki has some superficial scrapes on it, but those should polish out. I'd gladly take the scrapes instead of the huge Musashi logo that is on some of their other swords.
Not bad and what can you expect for the price? Hopefully it will handle some light cutting, but as it's a present I wont be trying it out myself.

Great stuff there Deb (I'm always the last to the party! Lol) - great first review - and good to see that these swords seem to be pretty consistent. Obviously they aren't going to be mind blowingly good for the price tag, but to be honest - they are definitely something serious in the value for money department. Keep up the good work! +1 karma from me.
