It's been a heck of a hard last few years, and so many projects I had in mind for the forum and SBG and the store and the whole thing generally, kind of got wiped out..
But we gotta keep trying, and for a long time now I have been interested in a particular type of cutting sword - basically a resurrected version of the Cheness SGC or those competition blades you see in Japan that cut Tatami oh so very well..
Like this guy at the end:
Now I will get into the details of it later, but when Alex from Swordier mentioned he could custom make some of these for SBG, after seeing the quality of the workmanship and steel at his forge (as well as the pedigree of the smiths he was working with) - I though, let's give it it a try..
Long story short, after some initial testing showing good results - we made a trial run, and right now are up to trial two with a few minor improvements (hishigami, better handle mostly) - Alex did some cutting and was getting some pretty darned good results:
But this isn't about selling it. I just need some people to put their ring in the hat who have some good written/video hybrid reviews to test it out for us and we will send you the sword and 20 mats to try them out with. No special requirements other than keep it honest and keep it fun, and (due to shipping) - be in the one of the lower 48 states.
If you are interested, let me know - thinking this could be the start of a cool new fun sword line and (I hope) get the review team running a bit again!
Thanks all, - Paul

I'd be up for it. I don't typically do written reviews, but I could so as a companion to the video review if desired.

I'd be happy to test stuff for you - Shizan is the primary focus on our training! I have several blades to compare it to, including Nihonto,if you'd like that.

Damn, I'd be stocked to see reviews from the 3 people here above that already put their hands up!

Ah man, I hate being in the EU sometimes....
Good luck to all, how many tester spots are there?

and what skill levels are you shooting for? pro I think you should have pros and beginners testing it. Firstly beginners are more likely to stress test the blade with bad cuts and secondly you really see how easy to use a sword is when you give it to a novice.

Assuming that being a mod doesn't disqualify one from participating, I would be happy to test and review the product(s) in question. I have decades diverse martial arts training, and I've been an active member of the online sword community across multiple platforms for nearly as long. I've made quite a number of contributions to this forum exploring practical weapon designs throughout world history, the commonalities found in certain design features of arms and armor, and how particular design aspects from differing times and places can be combined to create highly functional hybrid implementations.
Also, I would love an opportunity to do something like this before I'm too sick to do so. I know how that last statement sounds, but I am just being practical. I don't think a serious chronic illness makes me more worthy to participate than anyone else, but my health will only worsen with time, and I won't realistically have many chances to do something like this.

I'd definitely be interested in testing one of these swords out.

Hello Paul, I would be interested in providing a review as well. I would provide written as well as video components of the review and if desired can cut multiple mats at once like in the video. I can also add feedback/reviews from other local practitioners if you want. For context I have won/metaled in multiple HEMA cutting competitions, teach (among other things) cutting at the Tattershall School of Defense in SoCal, and run local cutting parties.

We could do a collaboration on this if you and Paul find that idea interesting.

I would be very interested in participating. I cut tatami regularly in my hema club and occasionally solo at my home. I've been swordfighting both Hema and Iaido for about a decade and a half at this point (though my iai is out of practice I still know the fundamentals), and have been part of this community on and off for years

Hi Paul! I'd love to test it out. I recently got a new slow mo setup and would be happy to inaugurate it with these tests.
I'm a HEMA coach and an avid cutter.

Good SlowMo is much too seldomly done for swords. You need to go at least to 1000FPS to see much though - and even at that speed it goes pretty fast.
