Mine came in today. First impressions were that it was extremely light for the size and blade type, and more nimble than most XIV I’ve handled. That last statement should be taken with a grain of salt, as they are all proportioned differently… but I’ve owned/handled InCarius, Albion, Windlass, Balaur, and Deltin XIVs. This one was great, although the most recent Balaur XIV was super nimble in the hand though.
Geometrically and fit/finish wise it’s in good shape.
The edge profile has a minor dip on one side, but for a hand forged sword at that price point I am quite impressed. It would not be noticeable if I tried to photograph it.
The blade fits into the guard perhaps perfectly. There is no gap. There are bigger gaps on Albions. It’s bizarrely flawless. I wish they had added more dimension to the guard, perhaps a touch of depth towards the ends. Again, for the price they did an outstanding job.
The fishtail pommel is a bit primitive. It has hard lines, and for a semi-waisted style grip I feel like the grip should be more geometric and less round. Again, for the price, they hit it out of the park.
So the rubber grip wasn’t that bad. If I keep this as a backyard destroyer, the grip stays. I haven’t really decided if the fit and finish warrants a fancy grip or if it remains in the backyard destroyer category.
My question is on the peen. What the H is going on here? I’m perplexed. What? How? Did they…? Someone explain. That said, it’s kind of cool!
Dave is the line/project dead in the water or is it something Swordier is going to continue?
Do you know if the guard and pommel are stainless?
This sword was $209. Go on eBay and they’ll offer you discounts that you can’t get off the website. Found that out after the fact. Shipping was a bit of a scam at $50+ because the Chinese gov supposedly subsidizes export shipping to some extent, and I feel like they made a few extra on this.
Some of the other swords they have seem to miss the mark on historical accuracy, or they try to do too much with hilt swag and miss the mark entirely. This little XIV with the fishtail pommel, however, is a great bang for the buck. If the company sticks around I may send this one to Jensen for a destruction test (or suggest they do it) to get some durability credentials under their belt.
