G'day, good folk of the SBG family. I thought you may enjoy my latest creation!
Brego; Sword of Haleth, Son of Háma
www.fableblades.com/Brego.html
The blade is modeled after the Lindholmgard Mose sword blade of the Celtic La Tene Era, found in Zealand, Denmark. While the original sculptures of the hilt were stock removed from bar stock. I tracked how I approached these sculptures and some other aspects of the crafting for my Patreon Channel if anyone's interested.
The blade fascinated me years ago due to it's intentional lack of an acute point. Apparently these were Cavalry specialised blades with no thrusting application from horseback, purely to maximise cutting effectiveness at maximum reach. I thought it was really cool so I had to make it :-D
The backstory to the sword is a bit of fan fiction on my behalf...
Haleth Son of Háma commissioned this sword upon promotion to the post of Marshal of the Riddermark. Named 'Brego' after the horse which bore King Elessar, Aragorn, at the Battle of the Hornburg. Haleth credited his survival of the battle to the confidence he felt after King Elessar made certain that he was weilding "A Good Sword".
The pommel bears a sunrise over a hill, echoing the hopeful promise of Gandalf which heralded Haleth's salvation:
"Look to my coming at first light on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the east"
The blade is made specifically for fighting from horseback. It's broad cross section right to the tip enables maximum reach for slashing from horseback, while a pointed tip is useless in a cavalry charge. It is a type which can also be seen in the Celtic LaTene era blades of our world, especially like the Lindholmgård Mose Sword.
