So, I have an itch for a hilt that looks like a little dude. Don't ask me to explain. Doing my research and looking at 5 different configurations. Darksword Armory Celtic - 15.5" blade, 2 lbs. Wulflund Celtic Chieftain - 20.5" blade, 2 lbs. Del Tin 1st century - 21.5" blade, 2.25 lbs. Deepeeka Celtic Warrior - 31.25" blade, 3.6 lbs. Deepeeka bronze hilt dagger - 15" blade, 2 lbs. So... the Del Tin is out of production. The Darksword and Wulflund are in the $500 range. The Deepeeka sword is about $175 and the dagger $100. Everything is about the same weight except for the Deepeeka sword, which is much larger, but also seems way too heavy for what it is. The Deepeeka dagger and Darksword Celtic are actually about the same blade length, the main difference as a buyer that one is 5 times the cost of the other. I know nothing about how either are made. Is the DSA really that much better construction as far as fit, finish and whether it's peened and steel type? Keeping in mind both are short swords/big daggers, steel type is less of a concern, also keeping in mind I won't be doing much, if any, cutting with these. I know the Wulflund and Del Tin are better made and have good reputations. I don't need two, so I'm just wondering if I should wait until one of those two show up here and pay the extra or go for the easy fix and get the Deepeeka dagger and be done with it. |

I believe the anthropomorphic hilt showed up first among bronze age swords, so in iron this is a holdover from the earlier designs. Given that, don't discount the Bronze ones that are available. We haven't heard a lot about buyers of the Ukrainian bronze casters, but at least on etsy they are well reviewed, and they seem to be a bit lighter than their Deepeeka bretheren. If it were me, I'd get one of these bronze fellows. Cheaper than the high end iron ones but just as nice, more expensive than deepeeka (but not a lot more), with the cachet of bronze. Can't go wrong! |

They've done alterations/customizations for people who've posted here. Certainly worth contacting them.

Ah, that's fair. I have a darksword dagger, and it's pretty nice. Maybe not worth what you pay for it, but they do good work.

Ah, that's fair. I have a darksword dagger, and it's pretty nice. Maybe not worth what you pay for it, but they do good work. Yeah, I have a DSA dagger too. I got it on the forum so didn't pay full price. It's nice, but my point exactly. For a piece where temper, flex, distal taper and all that jazz doesn't really matter, am I better off just getting something very similar for under $100? |

Well, I think it's the Deepeeka then! All opinions say they're decent swords for the price, just on the beefy side. For a Roman sword they're a pretty good option. I'm sure they think it's better with a bit of beef!

Fulvio found the parts to make ONE MORE so I initially said to go ahead and do it, but then I looked and found a used Del Tin on the forum and was able to save from paying for a brand new one (which still wasn't bad). Luckily Fulvio hadn't started on mine yet. BUT if you're looking for a last of it's kind Del Tin Celtic 1st century anthropomorphic, now's your chance to order the last one!

The price was 335.00 Euros plus shipping ($40 to Florida). If you're interested, just tell him you heard he has one left and Richard sent you.
If you haven't held one, it's REALLY nice! Very light and agile. Blade is stiff and well-tempered. No blade gap, nice peen. It's a short sword...here's a comparison pic.

The antennae is a Kris Cutlery, another discontinued oldie but a goodie.
