So I do not normally do this, but this was my way of a shout out and thanks for a very special piece.
I have been watching the work done by Vladimir Kostelansky for a while. He does some amazingly intricate mythological art sword pieces. There are a few of us on the forum who have sampled his work, but of course credit for bringing him to my attention goes to christianshort, who has had several of his pieces. This is one of them, entitled Tyr's Wrath, named for Odin's son, the Nordic god of war.
To paraphrase Vladimir's own description " The inspiration is a sword type "Z" of Petersen's typology. The project is a combination of a pattern welded blade with an alternating torsion core, plum wood, ancient bog oak and dark bronze, which is complemented by a pale silver inlay." Christian was kind enough to be willing to part with this piece, and did an amazing job with the packaging and shipping. It was really difficult given the shipping complications over the last few months and he tried several locations and couriers before we managed to find one that would ship it. For his dogged persistence, I owe him thanks Here's are two pictures of the rock solid packaging to emphasize that point.
And without further ado, here is the sword and scabbard itself
And a short video, which I will be updating on my thread too
Needless to say, super excited to have this. No words to express the workmanship of Vlad's work. Let the video speak for itself.
That's A great blade the Levin Lance, what's the use of a sub hilt? For grip or?
Good question!
So I think that initially, it was simply an artistic choice and aesthetic edition by Bob Loveless.
But there are some obvious things it does, extra retention, superior ability to saber grip and finger the second guard in the same way it is done on a rapier, etc.
I like it for those reasons.
I was thinking of having Gulzar make me another one but with a more oversized main guard and sub-hilt that protrudes just a little bit past the fingers to allow for punching with them.
You can imagine how much that could add yet another element to it.
Thanks for the clarification! That does make sense,

Levin/Nathaniel- That is a lovely and understated Bowie. Congratulations my friend!- also the display with purple table cloth, roses, and the other elements is a great artistic Photo choice

My new A.P.O.C. Survival Longsword. Very well balanced, totally usable single handed. Good distal and profile taper, blade is not extremely long, slab handle with full tang without a heavy pommel, PoB a bit under 4" from the quillons. Handles like a good arming sword, just a bit longer. That's what I hoped for! Edit: And the blade has a lenticular cross section, at least at the foible. This is a very well designed blade!

My apocatactical daisho!
That's pretty much exactly what I hoped it would be too. Glad to see they went that direction with the design. A nice contrast to the thick heavy blade of the broadsword (which I like)
Tho I am slightly saddened how different the blades are between the broadsword and longsword. If they were more similar width they would be that much cooler as a combination

They're looking very similar, but not identical. Of course it's a (long) short sword and a (short - for a twohander) longsword. Both are designed as swords used only one alone, not as a sword/dagger combo. All design elements are matching.
mrstabby: Hello, welcome even under these sad circumstances. Maybe put out a thread in the Renaissance/Military subsection.

mrstabby: Been thinking the same - but the person that set up the page might not be there anymore and old code gets messy when not maintained. Might be a "repair subscriptions, destroy function X, repair X, destroy Y" situation by now - would mean a total overhaul.

choseychas: Huh. Is there no fix on our side then? Or is it that you need to contact an admin since the auto system is down?

blackngold: Dallas is the worst place in the country to fly in and out of. High winds can delay your flight by 6.5 hours and leave you sitting on the tarmac for an additional 2 (ask me how I know)...
