Hi all,
I'm looking to buy my first katana. Here in the UK we don't have too many options.
I will be choosing a Hanwei model.
I am thinking of the practical plus elite which is £345. Another option is the Hanwei Ronin Katana which is £615.
Is the Ronin worth the extra money? Which is the more durable blade?
Thanks.

Well...generally you get what you pay for. However the difference twixt the two blades you mention are more in fit finish and fittings not so much in blade construction.
I suppose it depends on your intended use. If your going to USE the blade I'd personally go for the less expensive piece. If your looking for a display outfit that is still plenty useable needs be go with the Ronin.
But theres no point shelling out doubloons for a really nice rig your going to take into the scrub with you. But pride in ownership does figure in.
So there is that to consider.

You also might want to check the current UK laws regarding swords, especially curved ones. Matt Easton did a video on it recently.

Good advice re checking laws (because it's always good advice) but there are no issues buying or owning those sort of swords here as long as you don't wear it when shopping in your local supermarket. Anything for sale in UK shops like TheKnightShop or SouthernSwords is as legal as it always was despite the latest round of "lets make innocent people into criminals for our statistics".
I can waffle on more about the exact state of the swords-related laws if required.

We definitely need more info to address you to the correct quality/price sword. The first is obviously the use you intend to do: display / cutting / training. The second is your ideal budget. The third is the importance of aesthetics. A few examples here, assuming you are interested in all the aspect of a katana and also might want to give it a few swings in your backyard: - if you don't mind aesthetics (or you have the chance to replace the fittings), the hanwei practical katana XL is quite cheap at £230ish and has a monster blade. Fittings are very basic and samegawa is plastic panels. But cuts like hell. With just £200 more spent on better fittings, you'd get a great sword that also looks nice. - if your budget can afford a ronin, then why not going for the hanwei bamboo mat (£630). It's a very good sword, a jack of all trades, excellent reviews and looks more interesting visually with nice hamon and awesome samegawa. Worth every penny. - Some dragon king swords are also quite good, visually pleasing and definitely in the sub 600 range. I'd have a look at the Hana (£300 when back in stock), the Saviour (£604) and the Shi (£588).
