Hey friends, Who out there in the wild world of swords makes an inexpensive and simple baselard sword / degen? Looking for something as a 'user' so I am not looking to break the bank on something beautifully ornamented. As far as I know there aren't any or many production companies doing one of these designs - hopefully I am wrong! I am hoping to find a sub $300 sword of simple construction and similar to the middle blade in this museum display.

Post a picture or comparison on a site. The term could describe lots of swords. Include your budget expectations in numbers. Your enquiry is kind of all encompassing with no real direction. Look at sites such as www.kultofathena.com/ and window shop to a type of sword and then also look at European sites such as www.swords-and-more.comCheers GC

I do see the value in throwing a price out there , but I think 'degen' is a fairly specific form factor and I think leaving a question such as 'who makes this not-usually-reproduced sword?' open is sort of inherent to the question asked. I only know of one person who explicitly offers them as custom pieces. Most other people who offer custom work could make one as well, but I specified 'production company'. Perhaps I just asked the wrong question for the answer I want. Something approaching the middle pointy thing in the image above is what I am after. The specifics I am concerned with are roughly: Degen Production company Sub $300 Who does one?

The term Degen is generic and does not very well describe a medieval sword type. If you mean any single hand sword of the era, there are plenty of sub $300 swords aka degen.
Perhaps share an image of what you describe as a degen, so as to shorten the 20 question game. You can find 19th century Prussian civilian degen for $300 but figure you have some other sword/degen in mind.

Sorry for missing that but I don't see any image posted.

Seconding what edelweiss said, Degen is a German term more commonly associated with rapier / smallswords:
What I think you're after going by your photo is closer to the baselard dagger style.
Edit:
Opps was, chatting and edelweiss got his post in ahead of me.

I am not sure why but the image I posted did not come up. I used the 'insert image link' feature, so here's a hard link to ensure it comes though. lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/8yDCkp9qu3AbxCHct6hU7YIYsOM3hw_ZIoEJ8XM6krhOwchjIWr1nlCeaD7aD5JM0tab1AB-mvi2-oiFJyJhazg4Cw_ZvHwPvgw0IS5BqHNgsSAKePALnjCIzNnQz9VIqYHVBaV_V4mUYyI^ Looking for something akin to the center piece here. When I use the word 'degen', this is what I meant. I have only ever heard it used specifically to refer to this type of sword, I didn't realize it had a wider application. My mistake! I am not trying to be vague, I just thought 'degen' was a specific form of short sword and not a WORD for a sword. Baselard is a good and close guess, so thank you for making it. I am looking for a longer blade with a slightly different handle. Hoping to find one that is pretty simple. Again, just looking to use it for light target cutting and nothing wild. Thank you for helping me with the terminology!

Google docs/images doesn't play nice with hot-linked images I have found. The success can be hit and miss.
I set up an account on tumblr and hot-link from that.

Thanks E, It's a start and at least I have the proper keywords to keep an eye out. I am familiar with Lukas M's work but he is far, far above my league unfortunately. His stuff is beautiful though!

Thanks Andex, that's helpful They do have this model which is extremely close to what I am looking for. Might not be sub-300 but it's near enough that I might spring for it down the road! They have a lot of other great pieces I am interested in too!

No problem They seem to be a lesser known smithy, but the products look good to me. I just remembered there are also some very nice looking swiss baselard/degen swords/daggers on Arma Bohemia: www.armabohemia.cz/Novestr/swordsA.htmItems such as EP47 copy of a swiss "degen" and EP76 exact copy of a swiss "degen" might be what you're looking for.

Thank you for this link. They're now on my list of possible next blades. Arrigos has a Facebook page that's relatively active and I asked them a question through their website form about the color options which they answered in a timely fashion a few hours later. For those curious, my question to them was regarding if the color option was for the scabbard alone, or for both the scabbard and grip (it's both) and what the difference is between their scarlet and red colors. Red is lighter, scarlet darker.

No problem, I'm glad to share these lesser known Eastern European smiths with relatively affordable prices And thank you for sharing the question and answer you got from them, the colour option is something I had been wondering about myself too.

It's got some stuff going for it! Stainless blade though, which is a dealbreaker for me. Given my positive experience with the Deepeeka sword I'd be inclined to give their baselard a try even though I know the wood will be a bit brittle.
EDIT Just gave it a second look - the description is contradictory. One part says stainless while the other says carbon. Hmmmmm
