I was out shopping today and a lot of people stopped and thanked me for my service. As a veteran, I didn't think much of it. It wasn't until I got to the last store that I realized they were cuing off my hat. Ooopsie. Wrong "ship". It's both funny and horrifying at the same time. Sigh... life in a Navy town I guess. I think for the rest of the weekend I'll wear something different.

Fighting a most ferocious alien that would threat every single human (and dog) being has to be considered a thankworthy service... no need to be overly humble about that

It was a good ship with a crew well seasoned...
This weekend we remember our fallen comrades:. Dallas, Parker, Ash, Kane, Lambert and Brett.

One of my all time favorite movies. Wanted a ship jacket back in the day but they didn’t do merchandising back then like they do today.

Movie trivia: the story was written without concern for the character's race/gender/age etc. No mention of any demographic attributes was referenced in the original script. They cast the parts based only on the skill of the actor, again without regard to gender/race/orientation etc. This is why the characters are so relatable and real, they are just some random people thrown into a hell of a situation, like what would happen in real life. Any of the actors could have played any of the roles and the story would play out exactly the same.

And I remember my roommate’s girlfriend saying she liked it because a woman was the hero/survivor and not the macho captain. And after thinking about it I realized it was one of the first, if not the first, of that type of movie to do that.

I'm pretty sure it was kind of the first... first major "action" movie to feature a female leading role anyways.
Yeah, with that movie Ridley Scott shook Hollywood in many ways... can't be praised enough for that.

That wasn't the point. The point is that they wrote a compelling story first, then decided what actors should play the character. That is why the movie resonates with everyone. It's the polar opposite of what they are doing today.
And honestly none of us who watched the movie in 1979 even thought twice about the fact a female lived to the end or was the "hero". It just seemed to be a natural conclusion to the story, and perhaps added a bit of horror to it because it was the woman and not the man that was left to kill the monster. Once again, any actor could have played any role and the story would have been exactly the same. It was a brilliant peice of storytelling and film making.
Anyway, is this a good time to talk about Vasquez?

And I had also heard the Ripley role was initially supposed to be a male role but Scott changed it. But yes the story and characters are very much the Everyman or I guess I should say Everyperson type that the average person could relate to. I mean the two mechanics b*tching about not being paid enough. Everyone can relate to that. Another thing I really liked about it was that it was really a horror story just in a sci fi setting. And without a lot of gore which horror movies were really ramping up on at that time.

Anyway, is this a good time to talk about Vasquez? No. I disagree treeslicer, it’s always a good time to talk about Vasquez. But she wasn’t in the first movie so there is that.

It sounds like you had an interesting experience while shopping. Getting thanked for your service as a veteran must have been both amusing and surprising, especially when you realized it was because of your hat representing the wrong "ship." Life in a Navy town, huh? Well, it's good that people appreciate and show gratitude, even if it was a case of mistaken identity. So, what are you planning to wear for the rest of the weekend? Any fun alternatives in mind?
