I love the tsuka, especially how you use epoxy to strengthen the bond to the wood, harden the same, and most of all the tint.

Ok apologies for the 5 month gap in updates, a lot of things have happened which pushed this project into the background and I only just finished wrapping the handle this week after a lot of procrastination (I hate hate hate handle wrapping). I did a simple hira maki style and then fixed everything down with thinned epoxy so it's never going to loosen up despite my poor technique. (: So finally here is the entire mount finished! The weight sans saya is 1730 grams, total length about 108 cm, tsuka length 29.5 cm (over 9.5 sun?):
Hello Ari, at the beginnig You wrote You split in two the shira saya....How You did it? Using water steam or another trick? Thanks I used a bit of steam from a clothes steamer to ease the saya apart but to be honest the glued seam was already mostly split from age. The tsuka went into the oven at a low heat until it came apart.

That is beautiful work. I'd be terrified to even start such a project, thinking I would ruin the piece.
Do you have any estimate how many hours that took? It certainly doesn't look like you cut any corners.

I'm glad this got bumped because I missed this thread earlier. That's some terrific work! The tsuka & saya are beautifully done. Congratulations -- that was a lot of effort and it paid off elegantly.

Thomas Buck's "The Art of Tsukamaki" has a nice section on the Hiramaki wrap.

Yup, I bumped because every few months I look it up again to study it lol, I plan using the specs for a few commissions next year.

Great work I may have to try my hand at a shirasaya project someday.
