I would like to know also. Having my curiosity up I thought I’d check out YouTube to see what’s there and found some info there, but not much. The videos were poor and the tests were not realistic but did give a clue. Do a search with “aluminium chainmail”, Maybe someone will chime in with better info.

I also think it's interesting. Pure aluminium is brittle but I watched a documentary about aluminium and it looks like that with some alloys it could be a relative tough material, I mean they built automobiles with.

If it's like a pop tab, then it's likely gonna be just costume stuff. If that's the case, I can't see why anyone outside of movies would want it lol

Mostly people use aluminium mail as costume armour rather than functional armour.
Anyway, some testing:

Aluminum riveted? Great for the Faire. Not so great for the fight. I've worn this stuff before, and I can tell you now--don't wear anything too fancy or expensive underneath. Whatever you are wearing under it is going to be coated in aluminum 'dust' by the end of the day. Other than that---great stuff---just wear a grey shirt or tunic. ------McM

They insist on million dollar katanas but complete cr*p for chainmail. Which is weird cause plate is so affordable in comparison

I guess you could get away with butted mail under plate armor, but if you want to go for 'the look', you'll want to spring for riveted. Trust me...it's a worthwhile investment. Would you buy a car that looks like a gem on the outside, but has crap for a motor? Nothing says 'Noob' like cheap, butted mail that's loosing links as you walk around. Besides that, mail armor spans a 1'000 year time-span and was seen on virtually every continent on Earth. I'm not trying to push you...just saying. Some things in life are free, some things are cheap, and some things you have to pony up for. No, mail (good quality) is NOT CHEAP. It wasn't cheap back in the day. You might have to pimp out your sister for a helm and breastplate! .........McM

And 'NO', btw....I'm too damned old and stove-up to wear plate AND mail. Even in my 'relatively' light-weight plate armor, it's still a pain in the butt to wear all day to the faire...even though I do get a bunch of comps...especially from the ladies...much to the chagrin of my WIFE.

Hey I got a helm and breastplate
What I don't have is chainmail. I wonder if my sister is up to the task. I'm up to owning some chainmail.
But yea, I totally agree, I do need some riveted chainmail. I wouldn't bother with butted tbh. No point in it.

I know this is an old thread. Reviving it because I finally took the plunge and got a cheap mild steel butted haubergeon. $80 shipped. I like it. Love it.
But it's friggin' heavy! Way too heavy to wear continuously, walking around for days at a festival. Not if one wants to survive comfortably without years of training in it first.
I can certainly see why someone would want or prefer aluminum for faires. This haubergeon will be fine for short stints like Halloween (which is what I bought it for). But for faires, I think I'll get anodized aluminum.

It doesn't feel complete without mail

It is WAY heavy and I can see how knights had to begin strength training at very young ages to become agile in the armor of the day. I have worn it twice just for fitting /see how to put it on/wear it. I doubt I will ever wear it again but at least I have it for the zombie apocalypse...

If I'd get bitten in the leg then I'd become a sedentary zombie!

Can one even move in that? I'd become a zombie just by putting it on, moving around very, very slowly. Trying not to tip over.

Add sword, shield and helmet and you can kill your opponent just by falling on him. Btw. I had some moments of terror until I found out how to take the thing off.
