Its more about the thickness. A lot of spear hunting is done from a tree top, where they kinda drop the spear on them. A cold steel is amazing at this, its why I ended up choosing it over a windless. Plus windlass doesn't have my ideal heat treatment half the time. When hunting in such ways, as little resistance as possible is super helpful
I prefer windlass for a weapon in man to man combat, but I like cold steel for hunting

You do realize that it's only a matter of time (weeks...days...HOURS...) before you get the CS in order to get a comparison, right? The price seems right for both models which means I gotta get the Windlass. Question is, is there even a third choice for this type weapon? Eh.... I don't know, I already have the boar spear and it has always been my choice over the assegai. And if we are talking bear than that boar spear is the only choice. I have the boar as well as both long and short shaft assegai and will say the size difference between the boar and short shaft (super easy one hand wield) is rather immense, not toothpick vs telephone pole, but you get the idea due to already owning the boar.

Got the long version of the Cold Steel assegai spear! It's easy to throw it somewhat far and straight!

Update regarding the possibility of the Windlass being compatible with the CS Boar spear sheath.. The sheath is a little too large, width wise so it fits very loosely and has no retention. But it does fit inside it. Thanks Brother Nathaniel. It might have been another CS sheath that fit it or a completely different brand. It’s been awhile since I read it. Glad you like it. And if I was going to get a CS spear it would be the boar. The CS assegai’s handle was just too small for my long hands. And if I was going to hunt bear I would use a BF GUN!

Here’s my makeshift Rochin & Tinbe using a CS assegai spear head. I have longer spears but a short one has its advantages. The photo is quite old and made with a not so good camera.

Hmm, not what I expected to see. If it works that’s great but I think I would prefer something in the shape of the blade. But that would do in a pinch. Thanks

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Perfectly functional and low cost. Works until one can buy or craft a more appropriate piece. Can also serve for a machete afterward. Oh absolutely. Wasn’t a put down just a bit of a surprise. Just did a search for a sheath for it but could not find what I read before. Did come across a few threads on here and went back and read them. Good info, mostly good but some did bend where the head met the socket. They speculated that those might not have been tempered correctly. Others said no problem with that at all. Anyway, glad you like yours.

I have to add that I have a Windlass hewing spear head, which is the same as the Iklwa but sold without a shaft. I have beat it up pretty badly for about four years without any critical failures. I had to sharpen it myself and stick it on a rake handle from the hardware store. It cuts quite well if you can pick up the edge alignment with a round shaft, and it throws great. I keep the overall length the same as my own height, and it makes it very handy as a cutting, thrusting, and throwing generalist.
I hit a rock with the tip once on a missed throw and bent it over. I hammered it back and went back to business without an issue. So it's a little on the soft side, but that can be a good thing.
The CS spears are great weapons but the Windlass ones are perfectly useable, especially if you source your own decent hardwood handles.
