Weed-rat stew sounds delicious Should be better than sewer rat stew. Never ate rat but I would be willing to try one if made right, have to try possum first though.

Meat is meat. What's not meat is broth base.

The samurai of old would have their blades tested on condemned criminals (or dead bodies), You merely were blade testing :-)
Long ago, I worked a ranch with chickens....the big feed bin would get mice, many mice, in it eating the chicken feed, at night. I'd open the bin and there would be quite a few mice inside. Tried a airgun...too slow. Ended up using a large knife because upon opening, and the light, the mice ran away fast. Only fast reflexes and a knife worked.
In simular manner, many many years ago, the local dump in a small town in the middle part of the Country was heavily rat infested. Turn on the light and one had 2 or 3 seconds before the rats would dive out of sight....went there once....ran thru a tin of 500 airgun pellets by morning's first light with a single shot pellet pistol. LOT of rats.

I'm sure going to the market meat department is offensive to some folks. All those innocent dead fish, chickens and animal parts. Solution, stay away from that part of the market, to avoid being offended.
Pest control is pest control...something necessary...those who don't have to deal with mice, rats, etc are fortunate...since someone else can be hired/tasked to do that for them.

Used to be back in the 60's, the hippie movement times, there was a "live off the land" (like native Americans) sort of movement. But it sort of faded out. They found that most lands are too edible veggie and game poor to allow that kind of life style. Also, IMO back in the times with few people, veggies, seafood and game were more available. For instance, most of the original marshlands of the San Francisco Bay area have been filled in, which has greatly reduced the wildlife and fishlife that used to be available.

Me neither unless you want to include tree rats. ‘Possum is a little on the oily side. I have a photo of the last one I shot using a blowpipe. But I think best not to publish here. At one time I was quite good with a blowpipe but like about everything else one needs to stick with it. The last time I tried it I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn and the muscles I had developed are no longer there. I have it a fly with it, no more can do. Come to think of it I had a photo of a mouse taken with it, and maybe more than one photo but again I think best not to post.

Last year a friend was out hunting bird and was coming back empty handed. Saw a squirrel and shot it out of frustration. Told me it may have been good but overcooked it a bit. Not much meat.

Hey Raylon, did he cook it on the bone? I had given up on squirrel and rabbit to some extent because every time I ate it it was tough. A good friend said it was because it was cooked on the bone. Cooks the out side faster than the inside and shrinks/tightens and is overcooked. Deboning is the key. Then all the meat cooks the same. And yes, not much meat on one. That’s why you need a few to make a meal

You might try soaking them in salt water overnight. A squirrel is more tender in a stew. I’m not much of fried foods but fried rabbit and cat fish are an exception as is okra.

I came upon a mouse in my house and grabbed the nearest weapon which turned out to be a toilet plunger. It worked, but a bowie knife makes a better story.
