Generation 2 Henry V reproduction,Hilt wrap, Scabbard recover (nobleman) & suspension by DBK Custom Swords. WWW. DBKCustomSwords.com , Steve Walls Atlanta GA USA
I purchased this sword from Arms of Valor with Upgrades from DBK. After shootermikes review of the prototype I just couldn't pass it up. It is a beautiful sword.
This time I took a chance and ordered the upgrades up front . Resulting in me not seeing the sword as supplied by Gen2. This is the 3rd sword of mine that Brian @ DBK has customized and as usual his work exceeds my expectations.
it arrived in perfect condition. Shipped UPS
This sword feels like an extension of my hand. It is incredibly quick, It moves with little or no effort. ;D

DESIGN, FIT & FINISH
The Blade
The blade is a nicely hollow ground piece. It is very evenly ground and nicely polished. The character of the polish is somewhat unusual in that the hollow grind marks are at right angles to the cutting edge. the grind marks were not completely sanded out before polishing sot they leave a consistent texture under the final polish. The overall effect is very nice. it is brightly polished but not mirror polished
The Grip
The grip is quite short but not excessively fat or round as some of Gen2's grips have been noted as being. The original grip has been recovered but not reshaped. the new covering is leather over cord, dyed oxblood. I have fairly large hands and find this sword comfortable to hold in either hammer or handshake grip. Cutting with it is another story entirely. when transitioning my grip during cutting the combination of short grip and fat pommel caused the heel of my hand to become quit sore. So i changed what i was doing to compensate. Keeping a handshake grip throughout the cut worked wonderfully well.
The Pommel
Big, fat and shiny ;D The peen block is a really nice touch, adds lots of character.
The Guard
The guard is nicely executed. It is very symmetrical and very nicely polished. the blade side of the guard has a secondary grind in the center next to the blade. There are some slight grind marks here.
The Scabbard
BEAUTIFUL
My understanding from Brian is that his rework is over top of the leather as provided by Gen2. You can not tell that it is other than original. The locket on top fits very tightly to the wood core.the edges are smoothly finished with no gaps between wood and metal. Where the wood and metal edges run together is a perfect fit. The blade fits snugly the hole length of the scabbard and the last inch or so is tight, Katana style. When held hilt down the blade stays in the scabbard even with a light shake. The scabbard is thin and light.
In Short It is hard to believe that this scabbard comes with a sword that retails for $259!
TESTING
Cutting
This sword cuts like a light saber ;D But seriously edge alignment required no thought at all, just pick it up and swing and you have cut bottles. Milk jugs, soda bottles even heavy juice bottles no problem. I was cutting that last 2" of milk jug, were I'm trying to decide if there is enough left to cut... It cuts off a chip of the bottle and a sizable chunk of wood from the stand like it was nothing. Still as sharp as when i started.
The blade did take some scratches from 2 cutting sessions. They are strictly minor and I will not bother to polish them out as i will be cutting with this sword often.
Thrusting
Disappointing.
A moderate thrust into my cutting stand (4x4 pine post) resulted in a substantial "s"{ shaped bend in the tip.
on the plus side It did not break and was easy to straighten and reshape.
I purposely did not re-polish the tip yet so that you could see how little work was required to reshape the tip.
I did thrust into a milk jug and a 20oz soda bottle and it performed perfectly.
CONCLUSION and SBG Ratings
Cost
Here is the breakdown of what I paid for this sword.
Sword: $259.00
Scabbard recover: $90.00
Suspension: $75.00
Grip rewrap: $60.00
Shipping total ("there and back again"):$25.20
Grand total: $509.20
This sword is great fun at cutting and as long as you don't intend to use it for thrusting harder target it is a great value for the money.
Clyde at GEN2 has said that they will correct the tip Geometry for the next batch. If so that will make it a hands down winner in all categories.
Historical Accuracy: 4/5 (I don't think the original had tip issues. my opinion)
Fit and Finish: 6/5 Just Beautiful (extra point for the scabbard)
Handling: 5/5
Structural Integrity: 4/5 The tip is disappointing but the rest is clean and tight
Value for Money: 5/5
OVERALL: 4/5 ( I know it doesn't add up this way but i cant give it a 5/5 with the tip issue. With the tip fixed its a 6/5)
In case you didn't get it, Definitely recommended. ;D ;D
