Pulled from the locks in Kingston, Ontario Nice! Is that the original tang or a repair? All original to my knowledge. At least there have been no repairs since it was brought up by it's original owner.

Pleasant peasants hunting pleasant pheasants! Strange, I have the funny feeling we did this some months before (like almost word for word). Are we about to go into song?

As far as weapons if I’m not mistaken Germany or what is now Germany was the reasoning behind a messer. While swords were forbidden a knife wasn’t and a messer fit their definition of knife. And near as I can tell it wasn’t what a peasant owned so much as his justification for owning it, much of the same as we experience today. Definitely one of the popular theories regarding messers, though I'm more inclined to believe that it was called a "big knife" for no other reason than that it looked like a big knife.

Grosse Messer takes the word "Big Knife" and runs with it to Neptune. It's a sword used like a sword (ok, maybe axe or HEAVY machete).

Update time! I filed down the cut ends of the original rivet, then drilled pilot holes and hammered them in. The head is nice and secure now. Gave the handle a couple of coats of linseed oil, then reprofiled the edge. Cuts nicely into the edge of my chopping block, and then tried on a bit of privet coming up near the fence which it cut cleanly too. I still need to go over the edge with a stone but otherwise I'm calling this done.

While I was at it I fixed up the edge on another billhook. This one's a modern made hook by Morris of dunsford, it had a bit too much meat behind the edge. Cuts nicely now though again I'd like to go over the edge with a stone. Attachments:
