Sorry can’t help I have severe OCD and over analyze things. Sheesh Plated pennies are 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper. That doesn't really leave any room for "lots of other crap" Tell us about your furnace. I'm truly curious. Electric or gas? It’s a propane furnace, I’ll send a picture if I can |

"“Technically” it is illegal to melt pennies but honestly it isn’t worth it anyways because modern pennies are mixed with zinc and lots of other crap". Then, despite your ocd and over analyzing things you included "Only old pennies are all copper which I would melt but we don’t have many old ones" Pennies have never been all copper  ...........................anyway Casting stuff could be good fun and even lead to a market for sword bits Good luck |

We used to slump the 1982> pennies on an electric stove burner and gently lift off the copper shells.

Now, if you want to get .999 purity--take a peek at electrolytic cells for further refinement.
I built a small silver processing cell a few years ago. Same principle for copper.
Good job with refining your melt!

Actually, 1857 was the last year of pure copper pennies. The flying eagle and onwards are a mix.
But, not like it matters. If you start melting those down you got problems.
