Quick update… Antique Longleaf and Bhojpure have arrived. Nice, nice blades I must say. All still tight and functional. Not super sharp, with some nicks and dents, but still – very, very satisfied, expected much worse tbh. Stats below. Added some modern stuff for comparison. Have ordered four exemplars from Tora Blades - to arrive around summer, perhaps.

Where could one get a modern kukri made that has the same cross sectional thickness (and distal taper) as the antiques? Is custom the only option? And if so, who does good custom kukris?

Tora Blades and Kailash Blades both do "antique-like" kukris. But Kailash don't appear to have the thicker type (i.e., about 10mm at the bolster). Tora has some possible candidates, but their website doesn't give detailed specs about thickness and taper. You could email either/both and ask if they have anything suitable. Kailash does custom work, which looks quite good.

Awesome, thank you!

Markus, unfortunately I didn't get around to do the comparison of sorts with your antique kukri BUT I will say that it seems to be very close to your Bhojpure model. My Kailash custom has also come in but it's more of a modern design with modern materials and I don't know if it's appropriate for this thread. Unless you guys want to see it here, let me know! I have no horse in this race, but love seeing modern craftsman's work.

The blade is acid-washed so you can actually see the temper-line "Hamon" of sorts. Kydex Sheath, Micarta handle. Full-tang. English engraving one side, same phrase in devanagari on the other. Performance grind option. Friggin' da*n, is that a nice custom kukri! Love the inscription as well. Awesome, awesome piece!

Do my eyes deceive me or is this a tapered tang?

Here my new Windlass Bhojpure kukri and CS Royal Kukri Machete, next to my Windlass Assam Rifles Kukri. The blades look a bit shorter than they are due to the angle I made the picture from. It's the bigger Bhojpure without a sheath, I ordered the Kukri Machete with one eye on its sheath, it can be used for the Bhojpure indeed. The Bhojpure grip is very short, nearly too short for my hands. I brushed and sanded away most of the bla ck gunk it came with. Very thick spine, but good tapering to the edge. The Assam Rifles has interesting fullers which work well for a good handling but the small part to the edge has extreme niku and is hard to get sharp. The Kukri Machete has a very thin blade of course, good handling but some torque when making hacking moves.

Brazing.

Of the ones closest at hand, 2 are definitely brazed (old big armoury marked kukris), and another (smaller and unmarked) might be. Three more recent kukris don't appear to have any brazing.
