Virginia. The newly elected Democrats want to ban just about everything, including martial art training. The actual bill does criminalize several broad categories of "paramilitary" activities, but specifically only when undertaken with the intention that they "will be employed for use in, or in furtherance of, a civil disorder." It seems somewhat poorly worded, and probably leaves uncomfortably broad leeway in interpretation, but it's not actually quite as stone cold stupid or dystopic as implied by the typical crop of clickbait headlines.

I live in VA. It's a lot more "real" than just a right wing conspiracy theory, it's open enough to be a real threat of having dojo's regulated or monitored. But not quite to the 1984 level as of yet. And if the incoming legislature gets their way, ANY "red flag" will be enough to close down a dojo and charge it's members with a felony. Because "red flag" civil disorder, according to what the new representatives want worded in the law, is anybody even suspected of not agreeing with the civil authorities. And some "civil disorder" is healthy- on the other side of the coin, who can tell when a civil uprising will start and who will be on what side- and what training those participants will have. The way the law is written, ANY veteran of the military can be guilty of a felony if they participate in civil disorder (like protesting a law or other such everyday activity).
Right now it's a watch and wait game. It will do well for the law makers to remember where Patrick Henry was from.
I say the authorities should only be armed with mall ninja weapons. I think that is fair enough.

... So I've turned by efforts to walking cane "skills"- where I live they are seriously working on legislation to make learning martial arts a class V felony Seriously. Cane skills are quite useful plus a cane can’t be barred, you can carry that anywhere due to the international law. A dog attacked me a few weeks back and a flip of the wrist laid the stick aside his head with him letting out a yelp and reconsidered. He was going after my ankle from behind, a favourite attack direction for a dog. I didn’t even break my stride. About martial arts being made illegal; you might say that is already happening. I’ve noticed that the contests are pretty much watered down. The winner gets a trophy and the winner and loser both go home afterwards. Whereas I remember the winner getting something and sometimes the loser was carried home. A few years back while visiting my army buddy in the States I noticed a martial arts studio in his town that hadn’t been there before and stopped in to inquire about a sparring partner. The owner didn’t take this old fart seriously but after the third or fourth request I convinced the man. This guy grew up on the NYC streets and served at least one hitch in the Corps. Was stationed in Okinawa for awhile and is where he met his wife and probably got interest in the martial arts other than what the Corps taught him and his street learning. I had three sessions with the man and during this time I brought up the fact that what I was observing seemed to be a watered down version and his reply was that the law didn’t permit more. At any rate I thoroughly enjoyed those sessions and I think he did too as there was no charge and he was free from restrictions. We both learned a new move or two. Here are two world class artists, one with a bo and the other with a three-section-bo, probably the hardest of weapons to master. I do believe a little speed up photography is involved. I love the ending.

I've seen enough Kung Fu movies to know that the government will view martial arts schools as a threat and try to shut them down.

Oh, noes!! We should definitely act like our ability to live normal, civil, law-abiding lives has been snatched from us!!!!!!! I don't think I have enough hands to clutch all of my grandmother's pearl's. ...or...you know...maybe start sempriniing when you're actually losing the rights to something noteworthy...like say...for example...let's go with something completely random...like...bodily autonomy.

But more to the point- did Santa bring anybody a zombie tanto? I'm resurrecting the somewhat raddled one that I posted in "eBay Finds II". Once I got to examine it in hand, I found that it's probably older than Dracula (Vlad, not the movie one). Does that count?

What all are you fixing on it? Polish, carving tsuka and saya, assembling it with full rayskin wrap, leather ito, antique tsuba and fittings. The usual. About half completed.
