Before? .1. I miss the karma awards for contributions like a sword review (being a mercenary type). .2. I regret the loss of pics for so many of our sword reviews...a big value of SBG Forum was the library of sword reviews. I found them of interest and value....I lost pics on a number of my reviews, but lacked the time to go redo the pics. Maybe one day, when I have a life. .3. As for senior members drifting away, I don't think that can be helped. Eventually, one tires of answering the same questions. And as one develops interest in higher grade swords, the attraction of chatting about the cheaper, lower quality swords lessens. RinC p.s. I post less because I don't know that much and it did not take a lot of posts to share the little I know.

Just as a library with a lot of books has more value than one without, restoring the pics of the reviews which lost them, would be nice. It is a matter of time and effort. I have a Katana1980 sanmai katana with a really pretty blade (and an ugly nakago due to Katana1980 butchering it to get it to fit a standard tsuka...which was a real shame) that is worth redoing the pics for. If there was a reward for such remedial restoration work, such as karma, I would likely be motivated to take pics again and insert pics into the review. Last time I pushed for rewards for reviews (hey, nice ring to that!), I pretty much got shamed for lacking the altruism to write a review without desire for karma or such. Problem is, a lack of time. For me, a review is done bit by bit over multiple weeks...I'm doing a review that I've been pecking away at, in rare moments, for est 3 months or so. While I may be rather mercenary (when I retire, no way will I spend my time doing volunteer "community service"), how long has it been since we lost our review pics? And how many of the pic-less reviews have had the pics restored? So I doubt I'm the only one with free time (and motivation) issues. Just as cleaning up a local beach is a good thing (it is done occasionally here...though I have never participated), restoring the pics of our forum's valuable reviews library would be something of value to all, and especially to newcomers seeking knowledge before they buy. Writing a review involves taking a bunch of pics. Choosing the pics that are not fuzzy, etc. Doing the measurements. Writing and editing the text. Moving pics to PC and editing the pics (cropping mostly). Uploading to Imgur (currently still free). Posting the text and adding the pic links. All this without the wife catching me and asking why I am not vacuuming the carpets, washing the dishes, etc etc. Not a simple process. I'm doing another Jkoo review because I happen to like Jkoo swords, even though IMO they need to do better than off by about 0.02 inches vertically on habaki fit). BTW, interesting (and deserved) roast of Huawei in the lastest SBG monthly....IMO such a roast took courage, since Huawei really is one of the top Longquan production sword sellers. Not roasted as much for the blade quality, for the most part, but rather for the inconsistent customer service...as if Jackie was trying to run a full time service with part time hours (understandable with young kid(s)). But still....

Well, I loved karma points as well. As we've often mentioned in requests to bring it back it is not available on this iteration of the forum. There is no karma function to bring back. Hell, I was closing in on Chris fast when we had them. I would have been far and away the #1 karma guy on here by now, the undisputed Karma King, and you know I would have been enjoying that, hahaha.

I never was big on karma. Had plenty, gave some, only used the smite function once or twice. It wasn't so much an incentive to contribute as a, er, measuring contest. Friends would throw it back and forth at whims while newcomers were showered with it in the welcome section, but I really don't remember it being an incentive.
Some folk just need their ego stroked, some are just happy to contribute.

I still lament not having the cash to buy one.
I think that's another thing that separates Then from Now. We did fun, silly things like that so much more back then. All for the sake of fun. These days we try too hard to be series, studious, and a little bit snobbish.
We should be parading around in purple dresses and feather boas with our favorite swords.

I'm gonna need my dress back first. Obviously, after you get that stain out.

I got some of that spray on stain remover from the Dollar Tree. Looking like it's gonna work this time.
