Were such weapons used historically? I've seen similar designs in Kung Fu movies and video games, but I'm not sure if that's an authentic Chinese style of weapon or just fantasy embellishment. They weren't common, assuming you mean mounted on long hafts. I've only seen photos of three examples, one with a smooth sleeve, one with a knobbed sleeve, and one ball-headed: Some similar things from outside China, such as this possible candidate from ancient Mesopotamia: www.britishmuseum.org/research/collection_online/collection_object_details.aspx?objectId=3024914&partId=1The was also the shu (殳), a mace-spear: zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/32598999The Song and Ming military manuals show various two-handed mace-like things, like the Wolf's tooth club, two-handed maces with large heads, and more. At least some of these were only ceremonial weapons. But the ancient ge typically had a heavy butt, and some ancient Chinese spears had heavy butts too, so if the haft broke near the head, what was left would be a two-handed mace (and similar for many other polearms, including many non-Chinese).

The mace heads arrived. They are exactly as nice as I have come to expect from Tod Cutler products. The 6 foot octagonal hickory staff should arrive from Purpleheart Armoury tomorrow. I plan to burn some designs into the wood, paint it, and add some gold leaf.

Another way to go for (especially longer, heavier) quarterstaffs is to look for (ash wood) ballet bars. Where does one find ballet bars? I been looking for something to make a quarter staff with forever and can't find anything

I could use my kukri machete like a bark scraper and possible whittle it down... Now that I think about it 🤔

I encountered the same situation at a lumber-yard close to me. "We ain't got not no nary none o' them round poles, but we's got's them square'un's!"----"Thank you, Sir. I have a draw-knife. I can MAKE IT ROUND!"----------- Still looking myself. Everything I've found locally is CRAP.

Which is way too small and thin Might make a nice war dart/fetched javelin though once i get it a pointy spear butt cap and some feathers. Apparently those were usually make of pine anyway, and if it breaks during practice, then it's the cheapest thing in the world to replace 😂

I ordered mine from an online sports store here in Germany. Are they normally 200$? I think I paid 70 Euro (around 80 USD) for my 8 ft, 1,575 in diameter staff.

Here are some photos of my finished Monkey King inspired staff. It is 6 feet of hickory with an octagonal cross section. The business ends are capped with bronze mace heads from the Tod Cutler store. Since the myths of Sun Wukong are rooted in both of the Chinese traditions of Taoism and Buddhism, I've incorporated the eight trigrams of the Bagua as a nod to Taoism. The trigrams are incised into the eight sides of the staff in a spiral pattern and decorated with gold leaf surrounded by a black square (the two sets of eight symbols radiate from the stave's center towards the ends). Just below each mace head is a leather wrap over cotton cord, and each of those artificially aged/weathered leather wraps has been laser etched with two different Buddhist sutras (the heart and diamond sutras to be exact).

That's awesome. Seriously, that's one of the coolest weapon builds I've ever seen on this forum. Looks like it came right out of a kung fu film. Damn.
