When an irresistible force meets an immoveable object something has gotta give, or so the song goes.

Good post, wrong thread. It's always hard to judge if it's just a lemon or a general problem. War hammers are made to crush plate armor and not granite. It looks like it was to hard and brittle, heat treating problem perhaps.

A while back, I purchased the German War Hammer. It made a handful of strikes with this, and I do not believe that it should be marketed/considered as "fully functional" or "battle ready". First, the shaft cracked at the head and langets bent. Then, with a softer strike to a harder surface, large chips broke off of the hammer head prongs. A few more hits, the entire head broke clean off. The construction appears to be cast metal? I would have expected the head to deform or possibly bend, but not large chips and shear off.
I was not wildly bashing this against objects.
What were you hitting ?

First, using the back-spike, I hit a small diameter cherry log, as if I was splitting firewood. This broke the shaft at the head connection. I was not terribly surprised by this. Next, using a softer strike ( considering the current condition ) against steel caused chipping to the prongs, and several more hits resulted in the head shearing off as shown. I'm not surprised there was damage, but rather the extent of the damage, and the appearance of the metal that was exposed.
